Chemical Name: AMITRIPTYLINE (a-mee-TRIP-ti-leen)
Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat depression. It may also be used to treat chronic pain and other conditions as determined by your doctor.
WARNING: ANTIDEPRESSANTS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF SUICIDAL THOUGHTS OR ACTIONS in children, teenagers, and young adults. However, depression and certain other mental problems may also increase the risk of suicide. Talk with the patient's doctor to be sure that the benefits of using Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg outweigh the risks. Family and caregivers must closely watch patients who take Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. It is important to keep in close contact with the patient's doctor. Tell the doctor right away if the patient has symptoms like worsened depression, suicidal thoughts, or changes in behavior. Discuss any questions with the patient's doctor. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg if you are also taking astemizole, cisapride, terfenadine, or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking carbamazepine, cimetidine, dicumarol, clonidine, fluoxetine, fluconazole, fluvoxamine, guanadrel, guanethidine, guanfacine, a macrolide antibiotic, mibefradil, paroxetine, sertraline, terbinafine, tramadol, a sympathomimetic, or a phenothiazine. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including any mental or mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder), allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye, enlarged prostate, problems urinating (urinary retention), or heart conditions. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you have a history of seizures or porphyria. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg.
Follow the directions for taking Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg provided by your doctor. Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg has a MEDICATION GUIDE approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg MAY BE TAKEN WITH FOOD or on an empty stomach. AVOID EATING OR DRINKING GRAPEFRUIT JUICE while taking Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. STORE AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg at room temperature, below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C), in a tightly closed container away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg MAY TAKE UP TO 30 DAYS TO CONTROL SYMPTOMS of depression. Continue to use Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE of Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
AFTER YOU START USING AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg, several weeks may pass before you feel the full benefit. DO NOT STOP TAKING AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg without checking with your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. CHILDREN, TEENAGERS, AND ADULTS WHO TAKE AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg MAY BE AT INCREASED RISK FOR SUICIDAL THOUGHTS OR ACTIONS. Watch all patients who take Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg closely, especially at the start of treatment with Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg and whenever a change in dose is made. CONTACT THE DOCTOR AT ONCE if new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood; anxious, restless, or irritable behavior; panic attacks; or any unusual change in mood or behavior occur. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR AT ONCE if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. Using Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. LIMIT YOUR ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION while you are taking Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants. ALCOHOL, HOT WEATHER, EXERCISE, AND FEVER can increase dizziness. To prevent dizziness or fainting, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness or weakness. AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. DO NOT BECOME OVERHEATED in hot weather or during exercise or other activities since heatstroke may occur. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg IN THE ELDERLY since they may be more sensitive to the effects of Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg. FOR WOMEN: AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg HAS BEEN SHOWN TO CAUSE HARM to the human fetus. IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg during pregnancy. AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while you are taking Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg include blurred vision; change in sexual desire or ability; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; headache; loss of appetite; nausea; tiredness; trouble sleeping; or weakness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience chest pain; confusion; dark urine; delusions; difficulty speaking or swallowing; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; hallucinations; new or worsening agitation, anxiety, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, exaggerated feeling of well-being, restlessness, or inability to sit still; numbness or tingling in an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness or headache; severe or persistent trouble sleeping; slurred speech; suicidal thoughts or actions; tremor; trouble urinating; uncontrolled muscle movements (eg, of face, tongue, arms, legs); unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual or severe mental or mood changes; vision problems; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include flushing, fast or irregular heartbeat, dry mouth, drowsiness, confusion, agitation, enlarged pupils, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
If your symptoms do not improve after taking Amitriptyline Hcl 75mg for 4 weeks, inform your doctor. DO NOT SHARE AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg for other health conditions. KEEP AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg out of the reach of children. IF USING AMITRIPTYLINE HCL 75mg FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
