When I bought my first Maltese mix, I learned about tear stains. And unfortunately, they were even worse on my dog because he had allergies and bit and licked his body everywhere... leaving a red yeast stain (mouth, paws, back, behind). So when he was still a puppy, I did research and found that tetracycline was the cure. I asked my vet about it and got a long lecture about using an antibiotic for cosmetic purposes. Just like humans, if used constantly, the dog will develop immunity and if they medically need an antibiotic, there's a chance it wouldn't work. Needless to say, I gave up on the idea and learned to live with tear stains. Now – almost 6 years later, I got a second Maltese mix and decided to research again - especially natural alternatives (baking soda mixes, etc.), but then I found a review for Angels Eyes that described it as 100% liver with a preservative. I bought it and it worked great!!! As I enter my 3rd month of use, I took both dogs to the groomers and they remarked on how white they were. I told them about Angels Eyes and they said it contained tetracycline. I emphatically stated it did NOT, but immediately went home and did more research. This is what I learned....

Angels Eyes contains Tylosin – a type of antibiotic with a “narrow spectrum”, as compared to Tetracycline, which is a broad spectrum antibiotic. From what I read, it appears that Tetracycline use has shown that immunities can develop, however no studies have proven that Tylosin has caused any dog to have those same issues. There are other articles that dispute that – saying that’s what the producers of Tylosin want you to believe. By the way, I also learned that Tylosin, in its chemical form (and not mixed with beef or chicken liver like Angels Eyes) can be purchased for use with livestock for treating colitis and other illnesses – obviously in much larger doses. Several people asked online sites about buying it from feed stores and dosing chemical Tylosin for dogs, but it appears there’s a lot of controversy over the amount and the pureness. I came to the conclusion to steer clear of that for the sake of saving a few dollars.

Now I’m not a veterinarian, but after everything I read – I’ve decided that I’m going to continue using Angels Eyes. Not only does it prevent the red yeast stains, it clearly has had positive results on my dog with allergies. He does not bite and lick himself constantly as he used to. It does NOT contain tetracycline, although it does contain an antibiotic which appears safe, but doesn’t have any long-term testing studies to 100% prove that it is. So…. I’m going to use it through the 3rd month, then cut the dosage as recommended, but I’ll probably cut it even further and get to once a week as quickly as possible. And I’m going to continue researching the internet on occasion to see if any new studies / information emerges, as well as talk to my vet about it at each visit. I would suggest that all pet owners who use Angels Eyes (or other similar products) do the same.
