 | Are there over-the-counter treatments for solar lentigines (sun spots)? |
| Solar lentigines are dark brown spots that occur on sun-exposed areas of skin. The face, chest, and back of hands are most commonly affected. Skin-bleaching products available over the counter can help lighten sun spots. They contain the drug hydroquinone in a 2 percent concentration. Examples of over-the-counter skin-bleaching products include Ambi and Reviva. Some products also include sunscreens (Esoterica Skin Discoloration Fade Cream, SPF 10) and moisturizers (Ambi Skin Discoloration Fade Cream, Dry Skin). Skin reactions are uncommon with these products, but some people may experience mild skin irritation with their use. Check with your doctor before choosing any over-the-counter treatment for your skin condition. The best way to prevent sun spots is by using a sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher.Sources: Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs.
