Allergy Relief

 –  Sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes - they can all be signs of seasonal allergy. Allergy symptoms often begin during childhood. Allergies can be triggered by indoor or outdoor allergens, depending upon the child - but there's no need for kids to suffer or be distracted by allergy symptoms. How Do Saline Sprays Work?

Saline nasal sprays are specially formulated to relieve nasal allergy symptoms. The saline solution in these products may help to thin down thick nasal secretions that make it harder to breathe. These formulations help soothe and moisturize dry, irritated nasal passages. Best of all, saline nasal sprays are free of ingredients that cause drowsiness or other side effects. They're generally considered safe for children of all ages, including infants but check with your doctor first. Keep some on hand to relieve nasal stuffiness all year round.

Natural Allergy Solutions for Children

Homeopathic nasal sprays are another allergy relief option. Made with natural ingredients, these sprays may help to restore moisture and balance to irritated nasal passages. When a child or baby is congested, the skin around the nose may become dry and cracked. Gentle nasal moisturizers with ingredients like aloe vera replace lost moisture and reduce dryness and irritation. Free of medications, these moisturizers are generally considered safe for all ages.

Allergy Medicine for Children

Allergy relief medications containing antihistamines are formulated to relieve multiple allergy symptoms including itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose and scratchy throat. One of the most common antihistamines in allergy relief products is diphenhydramine. Many doctors recommend antihistamines formulated with diphenhydramine for short-term relief of allergy symptoms. Diphenhydramine comes in a variety of forms including a great-tasting cherry flavor made just for kids. It's usually considered appropriate for kids age 6 and over. Consult your child's pediatrician before using an antihistamine that contains diphenhydramine for kids under the age of 6. The most common side effect of diphenhydramine is drowsiness.

Non-Drowsy Allergy Medicine

Non-sedating antihistamines are also available. Those formulated with the antihistamine loratadine offer up to 24 hours of relief from common allergy symptoms. Always follow the directions when using a product containing an antihistamine and don't give one to a child under the age of 6 without consulting your pediatrician first. Antihistamines with loratadine come in several forms - a pleasant-tasting liquid or a tablet that dissolves under the tongue.

Aspirators and Humidifiers

When a baby is suffering from allergy symptoms, nasal mucous can build up and make it harder for them to breathe. A small hand-held nasal aspirator helps gently suction away excess mucous so a baby or child can move air in and out more freely. Best of all, it's medication free and safe for all ages.

Ultrasonic humidifiers restore moisture to the air so a child or baby's nasal passages stay moist. By sending more moisture into the air, these humidifiers ease nasal dryness due to allergies and dry air. Safe to use year round!

As you can see, kids suffering from allergies have lots of options to help them get relief. If you have questions, talk to your doctor about what's best for your child.
