I have tried many, MANY different brands of gradual self tan lotion (Dove, Jergan's, Loreal, Coppertone, Toma's, Ocean Potion, Mystic, Malibu, etc). This is my favorite thus far. With some of the above listed products, I did not notice any color until 3-4 days of consecutive application. With Banana Boat, I had a natural-looking noticeable slight increase in color upon the very first application.
Some of the other brands I've tried turned me orange; Banana Boat provided a nice natural tan color so I didn't look like an Umpah Loompah. I did not have issues with uneven fade or the tan coming off in some parts on my body faster than others, which I did have problems with while using some of the other lotions. Some of the other products didn't give me even coverage and I ended up with streaks or patches. Banana Boat gave even coverage and the only problem I had was with the palms of my hands, but that was my own fault because I forgot to scrub them after application. I got it right the second time and it looked fine.
I recommend the following application method for your hands: apply to the rest of your body first, then use lots of soap and the rough exfoliating side of a new dish sponge to thouroughly scrub your entire hand, especially the pams and in between the fingers. Once your hands are completely clean, use a cotton ball to apply the lotion to the back of your hands for even coverage.
The lotion is slightly tinted to ensure even coverage. Apply the lotion in a well lit room with a mirror so you can see anywhere you may have missed. The one thing I don't like about this lotion is the same problem I have with all self-tanning lotions: after the lotion completely dries, the pleasant scent of the lotion slowly turns into "that smell" caused by the tanning agent dihydroxyacetone (DHA). The odor is not nearly as bad as some of the alternatives, such as Toma's (worst smell) or Mystic, but it is a little stronger than the lighter lotions such as Dove and Ocean Potion. I would say it's average as far as the smell.
Overall , compared to other tanning products I have used, this is the best in my opinion. About me: I have very fair, sensitive and acne prone skin. I did not have any breakouts while using this product. In the summer I do tan in the sun as a supplement to using this lotion. Because this product works so great, I only have to apply it about every 3 days. For the winter, I may switch back to a lighter daily lotion that won't add so much color just to look more natural. I usually just want to add a slight glow in the winter and keep a lighter skin tone, so I wouldn't recommend Banana Boat for use in the winter on fair skin tones.

I used this product once - it says on the bottle that the tan develops gradually over several days. The lotion rubbed in easily, but it was difficult to see if there was more in some spots than others. The next day, I noticed streaking on one leg. 3 days later the streaking is fading, but the other leg (without streaking) is looking more tan. I plan to use this product again when the streaking fades away and rub in very thoroughly.

love this self tanner. have tried many different brands at all different prices and have found this to be the most natural looking. doesn't wear off in patches like some self tanners. i use it year round to give my face a little color.

I have used this self-tanner multiple times now. I am a very fair strawberry-blonde and used to go to tanning beds. Now I know better! While this product does not give me a deep, dark tan, it does give me the perfect amount of color to keep me looking healthy. It applies easily and has very little odor. It's also the only tanner I've tried that gives me a very natural color. I have a slight glow immediately after applying and then the color intensifies. Easy to apply multiple coats, though I often find that just one application gives me the perfect hint of color. Just wait a couple hours, or use the next day after your shower. The color will also last through 3-4 showers without re-applying. Love that I can get it at Drugstore b/c it's hard to find.

This is great for me. I have a light nordic skin that tans well, but I can't take the heat in the sun. I start this on my legs and arms so they don't look terrible in shorts and T-shirts.

As with the darker version of this product: In the summer I use this on my arms, legs and chest to fake a tan. After applying, while still tacky, I buff lightly with a terrycloth face cloth. That eliminates any streaks or blotches and gives a perfect tan even if I haven't had time to exfoliate first. Be sure to wash hands quickly after applying, use a scrubbie to get it all off or else use latex gloves.

This was not tinted dark enough for me to see where I was applying it and came out uneven and streaked
It tanned too dark though, for my very fair skin tone, although I was only looking for a hint of color not an actual tanned look as if I had been on the beach for days so some people might like the color.
