Natural Products for Thirsty Skin
Natural body butters are made from a combination of plant oils and waxes with little to no water added. This gives butters a very thick, rich consistency that is heavier than a body cream
or basic body lotion
. When you apply a body butter, some of the ingredients penetrate the tissue while the waxes tend to remain on the surface of the skin. As a result, body butters replace lost moisture in the lower layers of skin and form a barrier to evaporation to protect the skin.
A natural body butter will leave behind a slightly slick feeling but it does not make the skin as slippery as a body oil. Typically, body butters are best for very dry skin or for use on parts of the body that are exceptionally dry, such as the knees, feet or elbows.
Natural Butter Blends vs Pure Plant Butters
Many of the natural body butters on the market today are blended products that include ingredients sourced from more than one plant. These products are intended to be used right out of the jar or tube and do not need to be mixed with any other ingredients. Some natural body butters are 100 percent pure plant butters that are made from a single plant.
Shea butter is the most commonly used pure plant butter. A pure plant butter is usually thicker than a blended body butter; some are practically solid at room temperature. A pure plant butter can be applied directly to the skin or mixed with other plant oils and butters to create DIY skin care recipes.
