The two most common types of fragrance products for men
--eau de cologne and eau de toilette--both use natural oils to help wearers exude a certain scent. These ingredients will smell slightly different depending on the person wearing them, because they react with each individual's unique skin chemistry after they are applied.
Know Your Notes
Scents are multilayered, and each product has a fragrance profile comprised of different notes. Top notes are the initial scents that are strongest when the fragrance is first applied. They are often bolder and might include citrus or other fruits.
Top notes evaporate fairly quickly to reveal the next scent layer, the middle notes. Also sometimes known as the heart notes, these fragrances tend to define the product most clearly. Floral oils are the most common middle notes, and they are typically softer and warmer than the top notes.
Once the middle notes evaporate, they leave behind base notes. These scents are designed to linger until you either change clothes or take a shower. There are just a few base notes used in the vast majority of colognes, and they include sandalwood, musk, amber, and vanilla.
Using Celebrity FragrancesFragrances
are branded in different ways to help target the users they are most likely to appeal to. Celebrity fragrances will often try to encompass the personality and reputation of a certain athlete, musician, or actor. Often, celebrities will design their colognes based on their favorite scents, and you might decide that your tastes accurately coincide with a certain star.
Many celebrity fragrances for men are actually designed by female celebrities who choose sets of notes that they like to smell on men and then use them to design their ideal fragrance profile.
