A Spring Style or a Clipless?

Curling irons can be broken into two main categories: those with spring clips and those without. Spring clip curling irons are easier to use, as their designs include clamps that hold hair in place against the barrel so that you can simply wind your hair around the iron. Clipless curling irons are more advanced styling tools. Because there is no clamp to hold hair in place, it can take some practice to master the correct curling technique when using a clipless model. Still, many pros prefer clipless curling irons because they allow you more control over the shape of the curl pattern and do not leave behind crimps or creases in curls and waves.

An Array of Barrel Options

After focusing on either spring or clipless curling irons, you can narrow down the options further by deciding which barrel type you prefer. Curling iron barrels can be perfectly straight to produce an evenly shaped curl from top to bottom or tapered to create curls that are larger on the top or bottom. Barrels are also made from different types of materials. Irons that feature ceramic, titanium and tourmaline barrels are usually considered salon quality tools. These curling irons produce ions to tame frizz and enhance shine while you style.

Irons in Every Size

The last important feature to consider when selecting a curling iron is barrel size. Smaller irons produce tighter curls, while larger irons can be used to create waves and loose curls or to add volume. Longer and thicker hair will require a larger curling iron to get the best results. People with finer and shorter hair should opt for smaller irons.
