Exfoliators and Scrubs

- Deep within the skin, your body is constantly producing new skin cells to replace the old ones that cover the surface. This cellular debris is meant to fall off naturally, but often, natural cellular shedding doesn't take place at a fast enough rate to keep skin smooth and soft. Exfoliators and scrubs help to accelerate cellular turnover to promote healthy skin. Here at drugstore.com, we have a large selection of exfoliators and scrubs available to help you resurface and revitalize your complexion.

Cleansing Scrubs for Mechanical Exfoliation

Scrubs are a type of mechanical exfoliator. Mechanical exfoliators remove dead skin by creating friction with particles like beads, salt crystals, sugar granules, mineral fragments or ground nut shells. When you rub a scrub against your complexion, the particles that it contains loosen dead skin so that it can be washed away along with the ingredients in the scrub after use.

Many scrubs on the market today double as cleansers, so they remove makeup residue, excess oils and impurities while they exfoliate. Depending on your skin's needs and the formula, you may be able to use a scrub as your daily cleanser or use it in place of your daily cleanser on a regular basis, such as once or twice per week. Other products are designed to be used after cleansing.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Microdermabrasion products are a special type of mechanical exfoliator. Like other mechanical exfoliating products, microdermabrasion formulas remove dead skin through friction; however, the particles that microdermabrasion products contain are unique. Typically, the particles are minerals or gemstones that have been ground until they are very small in size. The reduced particle size makes microdermabrasion exfoliators highly effective at removing dead skin while allowing them to work more gently.

Chemical Exfoliating Solutions

Chemical exfoliators remove dead skin in a different way. These products contain natural compounds or synthetic chemicals that break the bonds between old skin and the newer skin beneath.

Active ingredients commonly used in chemical exfoliators include alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic acid, lactic acid and citric acid and beta hydroxy acids like salicylic acid. Some chemical exfoliators use papain enzymes from papaya or bromelain enzymes from pineapple to deliver results. Most chemical exfoliators are used several times per week, but there are also some intended for daily application.
