Lipstick for Color
The most commonly used lip cosmetic product by far is lipstick
, which is used to add color to the lip area. Lipsticks come in everything from very light, barely-there shades to dark, vibrant hues to bright, eye-popping colors. Darker looks are often kept for nighttime wear, while brights and lights are often chosen for various daytime looks. Lipsticks come in different finishes as well as different colors. Matte lipsticks have no shine and provide very rich, bright colors. Satin finishes are creamier and have a hint of shine, while sheer formulas are shinier and have less color. Always choose lipsticks that are the same temperature as your skin's undertones, using warm colors if you have golden or peachy tones and cooler colors if your undertones are pink or violet.
Liners for DefinitionLip liners
come in pencil and crayon forms and are used to make the shape of the mouth more prominent. You can line the entire lip area or just the curves at the top or bottom of the mouth to get different effects. The right lip liner can also be used to color in the entire lip area to serve as a color base for pairing with other lip products. If you want your liner to be subtle, always wear the same color as your lipstick or go one shade lighter. For a more dramatic effect, you can go one shade darker with your liner.
Plumpers for Volume
If your lips are thinner than you'd like, you can give them a lush makeover with lip plumper. Using ingredients that cause the mouth to tingle or sting, lip plumpers
draw blood into the tissue, so that your lips temporarily swell and look fuller. You can use lip plumper on its own or with other lip cosmetics to create different looks.
Gloss for ShineLip gloss
adds that wet effect to makeup looks and can completely transform lipstick. You can also wear lip gloss on its own or sweep it on top of lip liner for a simple, yet lovely look. Gloss comes in many different varieties with both clear and tinted varieties available. By mixing and matching different shades of lip gloss with different lipsticks, you can make an endless number of lip colors.
Balms for Hydration and ProtectionTinted lip balms
are a cross between cosmetics and skin care products. With these formulas, you get a hint of color along with ingredients that hydrate dry lips. Lip balms also offer protection from wind and dry air, and if you choose one with an SPF rating, you'll also get sun protection with your touch of color. back to top »
