What Does Spot Treatment Mean?

Spot treatments are acne-fighting products that are applied to existing pimples to help them heal more quickly. They are designed to complement a complete acne care regimen. Many spot treatments contain one of the four FDA-approved medications for acne: benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur and resorcinol.

A spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide can kill bacteria to accelerate healing and regulate oil production to lessen the risk of blockages.

Sulfur spot treatments also have antibacterial properties and they help eliminate the clogs that cause blemishes.

Like sulfur treatments, resorcinol and salicylic acid spot treatments break down the blockages in the pores to clear the skin. Additionally, salicylic acid treatments remove dead skin to decrease the likelihood of future blockages.

Not all spot treatments contain medications. You'll also find products that use natural ingredients like tea tree oil to assist with skin healing and plant extracts like aloe vera and chamomile to lessen redness.

Comparing Types of Spot Treatments

Acne spot treatments are offered in many different forms to make addressing blemishes as simple and convenient as possible. Blemish sticks and pens are available to make it quick and easy to apply a treatment to an individual blemish.

Creams, gels and lotions can be dotted onto a single blemish or easily applied to a wider area that is plagued by multiple blemishes. Sprays make it easier to apply a spot treatment to difficult-to-reach places like your back.

Treatments for Concealing During Healing

An acne spot treatment can speed up the healing time of a blemish, but no product can instantly erase a pimple. If you're looking for a simple way to hide a blemish from sight while you work to clear your skin, you can use a tinted spot treatment. Cosmetic pigments are added to tinted spot treatments, allowing them to hide pimples from sight just like a makeup concealer.
