Supplements for Hair Regrowth

Thinning hair has a variety of causes. In some cases, nutritional deficiencies are an underlying factor. Deficiency of some vitamins and minerals can lead to hair loss and thinning including iron, biotin, zinc and vitamin B12. Hair, skin and nail supplements are available that supply nutrients that may be missing from your diet and contributing to your hair loss. Some of these formulations contain additional ingredients including amino acids and antioxidants. Amino acids are the building blocks of keratin, the protein that gives hair its strength and structure. Antioxidants help protect cells against the damage that plays a role in the aging process.

Biotin is a form of B vitamin that's important for healthy skin and nails. One sign of biotin deficiency is hair loss. Biotin deficiency isn't common but it can occur with pregnancy, malnutrition or rapid weight loss. Whether biotin can reduce hair loss in people who aren't deficient in biotin is unclear. Biotin supplements are available for those who may be deficient in this vitamin.

An ingredient in some hair regrowth supplements called horsetail extract may have benefits for thinning hair. Research suggests that women using a supplement containing horsetail extract each day may experience an increase in hair growth after using it for three months. Horsetail extract also appears to have antioxidant benefits. More research is needed to ensure that this is the case..

Other supplements for thinning hair contain ingredients that block DHT, a hormone that builds up and damages hair follicles in some people. This can lead to hair loss. Some people are genetically prone towards DHT-related hair loss. These supplements contain natural herbal ingredients like saw palmetto along with other herbs that contribute to hair health. Saw palmetto comes from the dwarf palm plant. It may help block the production of DHT to promote healthier hair follicles. However, more studies are needed in order to say for sure that saw palmetto is effective for hair loss.

Also available are regenerating scalp serums that are believed by some to harness the power of apple stem cells, swertia extract and Chinese herbs to increase blood flow to hair follicles in order to support hair regrowth. The ingredients in this product may work together to reduce DHT build-up, stimulate the scalp and promote scalp health.

The Bottom Line

Hair supplements may be helpful for some cases of hair loss. Hair loss can have a variety of causes. See your doctor to make sure it's not due to a medical problem, nutritional deficiency or medication you're taking. Hair loss can also be related to hormone imbalances, stress and aging. If you have thinning hair, hair care should be a priority. Avoid tight ponytails and use a conditioner to avoid pulling on your hair when styling it.
