He had no appetite and had difficulty swallowing, the doctor recommended a feeding tube. I said no, brought him home and searched everywhere for an answer. I had used Nestle's Boost, Breeze and Carnation Instant Breakfast with good results in the past, but he couldn't manage to get down 8 ounces of anything at one time, so I went to the Nestle Nutrition website for help. I found their Resource Benecalorie. It had everything I was looking for, lots of calories, good fat and protein in a small package. The best part was that it was from a source I trusted, Nestle! I mixed it with fruit juice and gave it to Dad three times a day and he gained 25 pounds in a month! After a month he could eat soft foods and his appetite increased so I cut back to once a day in a smoothie or shake for some extra calories. After 2 months he had gained a total of 50 pounds ( his goal weight) and even though he's back to his regular diet, I still supplement (once a day) with the Benecalorie to help him maintain it. Yes, it is a little pricey, but worth every penny. I buy 1 case a month, and for about $1 a day, he stays healthy and I get peace of mind. It's best mixed with juice or a shake (milk or a nutritional supplement like Boost for extra calories) or smoothie, because it is oily and milky. You need to shake it really well before you open it or it gets clumpy. It has a very mild flavor alone, but is off-putting if mixed with just water. You don't need to mix it with very much liquid, I started with just 2 ounces of juice (I used pear, orange and cranberry juices, but any juice will work fine) and that was enough to nullify the mild flavor and oiliness. There were days when that's all I could get him to swallow, but 3 servings + juice gave him 1000 calories and 21 g of protein in just 10.5 ounces of liquid. As he recovered, I mixed it with whey protein, fruit, Boost, Breeze, CIB and/or ice cream in both smoothies and shakes and doubled his caloric and protein intakes. I'd give him small servings (5-6 oz), and I'd make half of them very thick so he could eat it like yogurt or pudding which he loved. The best thing about this product is that you can mix it in anything, soups, casseroles, drinks, puddings, yogurts, whatever you can think of. I'm convinced it saved Dad's life and I've told all his doctors who now recommend it to all their patients. I also researched pricing and Drugstore. com has the best price anywhere on the web. It is a great idea for those that can suck it up and consume it, but my son isn't that person. It didn't mix well with much of his baby food. It is very oily and changed the consistency of the food to a greasy dough. It is a fight to get him to eat it, and the last thing I want to do is turn him off to eating. Best Uses Comments about Benecalorie Calorie and Protein Food Enhancer, 24 ea: Our 10-year-old son has food neophobia and hates to eat. He's only 58 lbs. and we've battled to get even that small amount on him. It's been a very discouraging time trying to get him to eat anything. Pros

Comments about Benecalorie Calorie and Protein Food Enhancer, 24 ea: Today was my first time using Benecalorie. I tried it with a 6oz yoplait yogurt, when I mixed the products together I immediately saw the yogurt getting thicker. I tasted it, there was absolutely NO taste of the benecalorie, just the strawberry flavor of the yogurt. The thickness really bothered me (I think it's because I'm so picky with my foods and I'm familiar with yogurt being a certain consistency) So I added another 6oz yogurt to try and make it less thicker, that did not work. It was still way too thick. I ate a couple more spoonfuls, but then gave up because the thickness really got to me. That's the only con I have about this product. Other than that it is great, no smell, and no taste, & such a small amount of liquid. I am going to try Benecalorie in milkshakes, and porridge next. :) Pros

Comments about Benecalorie Calorie and Protein Food Enhancer, 24 ea: Use this product to supplement milkshakes. It is fairly tasteless and really thickens the milkshake. Must keep at room temp to be workable. Pros
Cons Best Uses Comments about Benecalorie Calorie and Protein Food Enhancer, 24 ea: This is a great product for those who don't eat large meals. We bought this for are daughter who has dysphagia (swallowing problems) and is underweight. We add this to a cup of yogurt with a crumble breakfast bar. When mixed up together it is a good consistancy for her and she didn't even seem to notice the addition. We have seen her wt improve and will continue to use so we ordered it on a subscription. She eats one cup a day. It does tend to give her the runs. But we found if we add a 1/2 banana to her diet every other day, she is back to normal! Overall a great, great product!! Pros

Comments about Benecalorie Calorie and Protein Food Enhancer, 24 ea: My husband has cancer and at times the only thing he can eat is broth, I add benecalorie as added protein and calories it has no added taste, he does not like Ensure so benecalorie has been a good addition to his diet Pros Cons Best Uses
Comments about Benecalorie Calorie and Protein Food Enhancer, 24 ea: I put it in my husband's soup. I like the added calories to his diet, but lately the product has had a gummy consistency and all the shaking in the world doesn't loosen it up.Half of the product is loose and the rest sticks to the bottom of the container (blob-like) and you have to work at it to get it to dissolve. Comments about Benecalorie Calorie and Protein Food Enhancer, 24 ea: I need to gain 20 pounds after a medical crisis and this is the only supplement that I have been able to tolerate. At 330 calories per 1/4 cup, it combines high calories with low volumn and a neutral taste. Unlike other supplements it is not cloyingly sweet. It does have a granular texture due to the whey content. I combine it with applesauce for a snack and oatmeal for breakfast. (My oatmeal recipe: oatmeal, 1/4 C ground walnuts, 1 Tbs. canola oil, 1 container Benecalorie and milk = @ 800 calories). It is also a good supplement to tomato soup and canned corn chowder. ![]() |
