I don't use any of this type of product very often, but I have always preferred Carmex. I found out recently in an emergency that if I put some on my psoriasis it stops it from itching (not an authorized treatment or cure, but a temporary help/relief to stop scratching until I can get to my Rx). The cherry-flavored with SPF works the best for my anti-itch. I bought the variety 10-pack of regular Carmex so I don't run out and have to pay a lot more if I need to make a special purchase. Check prices on the multi-pack because they vary greatly. Drugstore.com had the best price.

I consider myself a value shopper who has found certain brands to be satisfactory. Carmex is one of those. Our whole family uses it (three generations). My husband used to get cold sores, but never gets them now if he remembers to use his Carmex daily. His frequency has dropped to one incident in three or four years. That seems worth it to me. I buy the big pack for value.
