What is a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)?

FSAs allow you to take pre-tax dollars from your paycheck and deposit them in an FSA through your employer. You then submit receipts to your FSA administrator for health care-related expenses for reimbursement, up to a specific amount set by your employer under IRS regulations. FSAs are financially advantageous because pre-tax dollars are used to pay for health care-related expenses.

For more information about FSAs, contact your employer.

    What is the FSA Store?

The drugstore.comâ„¢ FSA Store is a free service designed to help simplify the use of Flexible Spending Account (FSA) programs. We clearly mark over-the-counter (OTC) products most likely to be eligible for reimbursement with an FSA icon*:

To help eliminate the tedious paperwork, we keep track of all FSA-eligible purchases and provide you with receipts to submit to your FSA administrator.

    * Note: although the IRS sets guidelines for FSA programs, individual employers have the final determination of which expenses are covered by their FSA programs.

What type of purchases are FSA eligible?

In September 2003, the IRS added certain over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to the list of products eligible for coverage under FSA programs (see IRS Revenue Ruling 2003-102). Under IRS regulations, OTC products are reimbursable if they are used to alleviate or treat personal injuries or sickness and are generally accepted as falling within the category of medicine or drugs. Examples include:

    • Cough, cold, and allergy products
    • Antacids
    • Antifungals
    • Pain relievers
    • First-aid products
    • Dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbals, and botanicals, are covered when used to treat a current illness, but not when used for general health purposes.

Note: although the IRS sets the general rules for FSA programs, individual employers have the final determination of which expenses are covered by their FSA programs.

Are prescription and contact lens purchases FSA eligible?

Yes. For prescription purchases, when you print a receipt you will have the option to include a patient's prescription purchases on the receipt. For contact lenses, you will need to print a separate receipt at VisionDirect.com.

How do I get a receipt for my FSA eligible purchases?

To print a receipt for FSA-eligible purchases, log-in to your account via the link on our FSA Store homepage. After you sign-in, select the date range. You can also choose which pharmacy patient's purchases, if any, you want included on your receipt.

After you click the continue button, a window will pop-up with a printable receipt that includes all of your FSA-eligible purchases during the date range you selected.

Use your web browser's print functionality, which is typically found by selecting File Menu > Print to print a receipt. You will then need to submit it to your FSA administrator.

Note: the receipt appears as a pop-up. If you have pop-up blocking software on your computer you will need to disable it to view your receipt.

I am a health care administrator. Where can I learn more about your FSA solution?

FSA administrators need efficient ways to auto-substantiate FSA purchases. Our goal is to help administrators save time, reduce administrative costs, improve cash flow, and streamline processes by:

    • Identifying FSA-eligible items from start to finish
    • Auto-substantiating claims at point-of-sale
    • Eliminating paper receipts
    • Increasing the speed of processing
    • Lowering the cost of administration

Items are automatically deducted from FSA-approved credit cards, so that you don't have to process paper receipts. We track all claims and can provide claim information so you reduce time spent processing claims.*

Contact us at fsa@drugstore.com today to learn more about how you can participate in our convenient and innovative service.

    * HIPAA regulations allow PHI to be shared for payment or health care operations purposes.

Note: although the IRS sets guidelines for FSA programs, individual employers have the final determination of which expenses are covered by their FSA programs.
