Do not use this product if you have experienced any reaction to hair color products or have a sensitive, irritated or damaged scalp. In these cases, do not conduct the skin allergy test and consult a doctor before using any hair color product. Conduct a skin allergy test 48 hours prior to each application, even if you have already used coloring products before.
Skin allergy test instructions:
Must be performed 48 hours before you color your hair. You will need a cotton ball or swab, a plastic bowl and a plastic spoon.
To open, unscrew the entire Color Activating Crme cap (Bottle #2). Don't pull off the tab. Then unscrew the Color Enhancing Colorant cap (Bottle #1).
Mix small equal parts of the Color Enhancing Colorant and Color Activating Crme in a plastic bowl
Tightly recap both bottles

Examine the test area during the next 48 hours. If no reaction occurs, you are ready to color.
The absence of a reaction to this test is no guarantee that an allergic reaction may not occur as a result of a future hair coloring process. However, this test represents an important precaution. Please consult a doctor if you have any doubts.

What to do if you have a reaction during or within the next 48 hours of coloring your hair if during coloring you experience:
Any stinging, burning or rash, rinse immediately and discontinue use as this may be an indication of a more serious reaction. Do not color.
your hair again before consulting a doctor or seeking medical advice.
Any rapidly spreading skin rash, dizziness or faintness, shortness of breath or swelling to eyes/face, rinse immediately and seek immediate medical attention.
If after coloring or on the following days you experience:
Problems such as itching, rash, swelling to eyes/face, blistering or skin/scalp weeping, seek immediate medical attention.
Strand test:
Do the Strand Test each time you color to determine optimal timing and color results. Perms, relaxers, previous color, and the sun can affect your results and timing.
You will need: scissors, tape and a clock.
Cut a 1/4 inch wide strand from the darkest or grayest part of your dry hair close to the scalp and tape at the cut end. Dampen with water.
Completely cover the hair strand with the mixture remaining from the Allergy Test. Start timing.
After 10 minutes (8 minutes for permed or relaxed hair), check the strand. If the strand is not the color you want, return it to the mixture and check the color every few minutes for up to 20 minutes.
Fill in your personal color time below:
My timing for desired color: _______ minutes.
Useful tips from the experts at Clairol:
If hair has build-up, shampoo one day prior to coloring. Do not shampoo immediately before coloring. Your scalp has natural oils that help protect it during coloring.
To prevent staining, apply a little moisturizer around your hairline
For best results, do not shampoo your hair for 24 hours after coloring
If you plan to perm your hair, perm first, and then you can use Natural Instincts the very same day as long as your scalp is not irritated and is in good condition
If you plan to chemically relax your hair, relax your hair first, and then wait at least 7 days and one shampoo before coloring

I was also compelled to write a review based on the bad ones - If you're thinking of buying this product, I recommend reading different reviews of different colors - people here are rating low because they dyed their hair black with a black hair dye (that does not pretend to be anything but black..) and are dissatisfied... because they have black hair. :|
I've used Natural Instincts for about 6 months, in Clove (a dark ash brown) and more recently in this color - Midnight Black. I loved the clove color as well, but it didn't seem to stay in my hair very well - I'd have about 5 washes before it got noticeably lighter, though not unpleasant or brassy. This color seems to be "sticking" a little better - this is not a huge problem though, because the dye is so gentle I don't worry about using it every 4 weeks or so. I have naturally dark blond/light brown hair. The I used Midnight Black about 2 weeks after using Clove, and I have beautiful, almost-black hair - think "blackish brown" mascara color. The product smells fantastic and comes with an (also wonderful smelling) conditioner to use once a week. I use it 2-3 times a week since I have pixie cut short hair (I only use 1/2 a box per application, making this also a great deal), but it would be enough to use on longer hair 1-2 times a week for the duration of the dye lasting.
When you're dying your hair, the mixture looks rather purply (I'm not sure if this is the norm for black dyes), but don't let this freak you out... you'll end up with beautiful, soft, brownish black hair. It's also important to note that the color depends a lot on what color your hair already is... do a strand test if you're not sure!!

I have been using this product for over 12 years now and I can assure you that the shine and gentleness you will find in this product, you can not find in any other.... The other day I decided to try Feria and after I did, I ran back to my basic instinct. I'm glad because I really saw the difference. One thing to know is that this really deposit color. Don't be fooled by the fact that it contains no ammonia or that it comes off after 24 washes. So if you like me that wants color and lots of shine for a healthy looking hair, go for it!!!i

I use this for my graying, sometimes permed, hair. I've been using Natural Instincts for many years, and using Midnight Black for about three years. The product is gentle, and the included tube of Color Treat conditioning treatment is fantastic -- the best rinse-out conditioner I've ever used.
My natural hair color is dark brown-black that is graying. Midnight Black is not a true jet black (a hair dye color I've tried before, and looks artificial), but a deep black-brown, as another reviewer stated. Brown begins to dominate black after repeated washings.
This is a semi-permanent not a temporary hair dye, meaning the color will fade with washing, until it is refreshed with a new application, but it will never fully disappear. Someone with lighter color hair who wants to test out a darker shade should not use a semi-permanent dye.
Natural Instincts now includes a color refresher to revitalize the hair color two weeks after dying. I stopped using a particular hair product which severely stripped my hair's dyed color, so I no longer have a lot of color loss. I did try the color refresher, and I was not impressed. It did little to cover the striking difference between the new growth of my gray hair, and my already dyed gray hair. I still looked like I needed to dye my hair again. The amount of color treat conditioner was reduced by half since the inclusion of the color revitalizer. I'd rather have more of the conditioner, which keep my hair in great shape leading to longer color retention.
I think the formula changed recently. Before, one of the warnings in the instructions was not to leave the dye on permed hair more than 8 minutes. Now, there is no such warning that I could find in the instructions. I noticed that some of my new gray is not covered as well as it was with the old Natural Instincts formula, even though I can now leave the dye on my permed hair two extra minutes.

listen ladies...I am a professional stylist and a beauty/ product junkie and I can swear by this product. I have been dying my hair with clairol/basic instinct for over 15 years and it has always consistently given me shiny, healthy looking hair. Mind you, I have thin hair but the shine is inevitable and amazingly reliable. The only con is that you have to apply once a month or so in order to keep up with the shininess But is so worth it!!! Note: it will deposit color just like a dye with amonia. Don't underestimate!

I really like this whole line of product. I have used a few of the browns but decided to switch it up and go black. Some of the reviews complain of the color. This is surprising to me because it is semi permanent and it is black. So if you don't want black hair don't use this. I would think that was self explanatory but apparently not. This product is great. I have started to get a few - grey hairs and this works for me. I also have thin fine hair and this product is gentle and gives some texture without the harshness of other colorants. I will continue to use this product- it is quick, no smell, and is gently. La la love it.

I was compelled to write based on so many bad reviews of this product. Most users seem surprised that their hair actually turned out black. Unlike them, that is exactly what I wanted and why I picked up the box. Lo and behold, I was not disappointed and have continued to use this product for nearly ten years. I tried one other brand once that was way too harsh and burned my scalp. This brand is very gentle and makes my hair look even healthier afterward. And it is not "permanent", but any black is going to last a long time--any stylist that knows anything will warn you of that fact. I do re-color after a couple of months, as it does fade and my roots begin to show a bit, but my natural hair is already a quite dark brown so it blends nicely. Everyone thinks I am a natural black.

I wanted my hair to be darker, and i only wanted the color to stay in for a short amount of time, so i could see if i actually wanted to dye my hair. I was told by a specialist that since i already had dark hair, buying black will just make it darker. This was not the case. It was easy to use, but a ton of my hair was falling out and it scared me. When my hair dried i looked like i was wearing a wig. It was PITCH BLACK, and very shiny. It looked very fake and strange. I washed my hair twice last night and 3 times today, and i have a feeling the color isnt going to change. so i plan to call the company.

I have naturally black/brown Asian hair and I've been wanting to cover my grey hairs, which are pretty thick and white. The color of this product is really black and didn't cover my hardy white hairs for more than 2-3 weeks. It is watery, but I just applied it upside down in the tub and stood there while the clock ticked. Small price for a cheaper alternative. Not a big deal for me, but the color is still to black for my taste and didn't do the job I wanted. Most of my regular hair is still black, but the dark brown sheen is starting to come back after abotu 3 weeks. I'd try this if you really want black hair and you don't have white hair.
Comments about Clairol Natural Instincts Haircolor, Midnight Black 36, 1 ea:
I'm a black woman with natural afro hair. I purchased this dye because it's not harsh and I wanted to cover my gray in the front. This stuff covers gray better than any permanent color I've ever used. It is perfect in every way EXCEPT the actual color. It is deep, deep unnatural black. The first day it looked so black that my hair looked painted. I figured it would be ok because after a few washings it would bleed out. Not so. There is no residual dye coming from my hair whatsoever. So the good news it is it wont stain your sheets and towels for weeks to come. Bad news is I'm usually a young looking 42 but now I wonder if the overdyed color makes me look like an old lady trying to look young? It's weird. Anyway be warned. You're stuck with this color once you use it. In every other way this product is wonderful though. Not a speck of gray to be found, I can't even pick them out and I had quite a bit in front.
Do the skin allergy test 48 hours before each application, even if you have already used coloring products.
Helpful hints
Apply color to damp hair that is free of styling product build-up. Do not shampoo immediately before coloring, as the scalp's natural oils
help to protect it during coloring.
Before starting:
Have a clock ready for timing
Put on gloves
Comb hair gently
Put towel around shoulders to protect clothing
Step 1: Get ready to color
Tear off and discard the tab from the Color Activating Crme (Bottle #2). Then unscrew the cap.
Open the Color-Enhancing Colorant (Bottle #1) and squeeze entire contents into Bottle #2.
Replace cap. Place gloved finger over tip, point away from face, and shake well until the color has fully mixed.
Step 2: Apply color for roots and all-over color
After mixing, apply color immediately to damp hair.
Apply mixture first to your roots and where you have the most gray.
When roots are completely covered, apply remaining color quickly to the rest of your hair by parting and lifting hair as you apply.
If you apply color every 4-6 weeks, apply color to roots only and wait until the last 5-10 minutes of your timing to apply to the rest of your hair.
Work mixture through until hair is completely saturated. Do not rub into scalp.
Step 3: Wait 10 minutes
Now, start your timer for just 10 minutes (or the time indicated by your strand test).
For resistant gray hair, you may need to leave color on for an additional 5 minutes, for no longer than a total of 20 minutes.
Step 4: Rinse and condition
Rinse until water runs clear
Gently massage a quarter-sized amount of the Color Treat™ Conditioner (Tube #3) through your hair
Leave on for 2 minutes, then rinse
Save remaining Color Treat Conditioner to use once a week for fresh, radiant color and healthier-looking hair**
If any color gets on your skin or household surface, wipe it off immediately with a damp towel. Once mixed, never reseal or store the color in a closed container, as it could burst. Pour any unused color mixture down the drain, as it will lose its effectiveness after 30 minutes.
Step 5: Refresh your color after 2 weeks
Natural Instincts Colorfresh™ Revitalizer Boost your color in just minutes!
Use it 2 weeks after you have colored your hair. Note: Before using it, conduct another skin allergy test 48 hours before application by applying a small amount of the product to an area the size of a quarter in the bend of your elbow and allowing to dry. Do not wash this area for 48 hours. If there are no skin reactions, proceed with product application. If a rash, redness, burning or itching occurs, you must not use this product. The color of the Revitalizer product does not represent your final hair color result.
Shampoo hair as usual
Put on gloves
Apply the entire sachet of ColorFresh™ Revitalizer into your hand and distribute uniformly through the hair, concentrating on your roots and where you have the most gray
Leave on for 5 minutes if you want a more intense color result, leave on for up to 10 minutes
