Always file nails in one direction.  Back and forth filing could weaken the nail and cause it to split.

Pro tip: Soak fingers in warm water to render cuticles soft and pliable.  Using the beveled end of the cuticle pusher, gently push cuticles back into a square shape.  Using the v-shaped tip, remove any jagged edges of strands of skin.  Never cut healthy cuticle, since cutting will toughen the skin and may damage the nail or cause infection.  Use nail clipper to cut nails into a shape that suits your preference.  Use sapphire file to smooth rough edges of nails.  The 3-way buffer will give nails a natural shine.  Use the white surface to remove ridges, the pink surface to smooth and remove stains, and the grey surface to buff to a natural shine.  Store all your tools in the fashionable satin case provided.
