The Crane Humidifier Filter for Drop Shape Humidifiers (HS-3161) is a replacement filter cartridge, for use with the Drop Shape Cool Mist Humidifiers. This demineralization filter cartridge helps reduce this white dust, which is a deposit of minerals caused by hard water. For best results replace filter after every 30-40 fillings under normal use or 1-2 months or when the humidifier has not been operated for an extended period of time.

I'm not sure why some reviewers have said the item doesn't fit, but ours fit, fine. I also wonder why Crane doesn't pack at least one filter in with the humidifier, since they recommend not running it without one. So far, it's working as described. Since we never ran the humidifier without the filter, hard to tell if it's really warding off mineral build up. Too early to tell. The downside: If you follow the recommended replacement schedule, you could end up spending a lot of money.

Drugstore.com displays the new version of this filter on their website (it shows 5 humidifiers on the box whereas the old filters displayed just 3), however, I received the old version of the filter. I've contacted them to alert them of the problem. Anyone shopping around will notice that nearly all online retailers are experiencing this problem (however, they all at least display the old version of the box). One of the largest online retailers currently has the item on review and is no longer shipping it--Drugstore.com needs to do the same, or at least display the correct item.
