Abaca, an indigenous plant in the Philippines, is a source for sustainable materials - from the manufacture of pulp and paper to gift bags and creative packaging concepts.  Just like coconut, all the parts of the plant are utilized from the leaf to the roots and harvested in a sustainable process.  de~luxe is using the inner layer of the abaca plant  to promote an eco friendly way to wrap spa & bath gift sets - the "sinamay", a linen-like woven fabric  extracted from the plant can be used repeatedly during its lifetime and is biodegradable when disposed.

The abaca industry in the Philippines is primarily cottage based that provides a source of livelihood for women (wives of farmers and fishermen) and out of school youth in the rural areas of the country.  Sadly the industry continues to be threatened by serious diseases wiping out abaca plantations.  de~luxe's use of "sinamay" helps Philippine efforts promoting sustainability and supporting rural employment to increase family incomes of the poor.
