Chemical Name: VALSARTAN (val-SAR-tan) and HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (hye-droe-klor-oh-THYE-a-zide)
Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg is an angiotensin II receptor blocker and thiazide diuretic combination used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
WARNING: Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg may cause birth defects or fetal death if you take it while you are pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. SOME MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg. DO NOT TAKE DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg if you are taking dofetilide or ketanserin. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following: adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), diuretics (eg, furosemide), narcotic pain medicines (eg, morphine), aspirin, cholestyramine, colestipol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen), diazoxide, digoxin, lithium, potassium, potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone), diabetes medicine (eg, glipizide, metformin), insulin, or another medicine for blood pressure. This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg may interact with other medicines you take. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including dehydration; low blood volume; swelling or fluid retention; low blood sodium, chloride, potassium, or magnesium levels; high blood calcium levels; asthma; diabetes; gout; heart problems (eg, congestive heart failure); liver, gall bladder, or kidney problems; parathyroid gland problems; high blood cholesterol or lipid levels; systemic lupus erythematosus; allergies; pregnancy; or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are on a low-salt (sodium) diet, are on dialysis, or have recently had nerve surgery. Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction (eg, swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; trouble swallowing or breathing; hoarseness) after taking any other angiotensin II receptor blocker or an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor (eg, captopril). USE OF DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you are pregnant, have severe kidney problems, or are unable to urinate. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg.
Follow the directions for taking Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg provided by your doctor. AN EXTRA PATIENT LEAFLET IS AVAILABLE WITH DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information. TAKE DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg BY MOUTH WITH OR WITHOUT FOOD. DRINKING EXTRA FLUIDS while you are taking Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg is recommended. Check with your doctor for instructions. DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg MAY INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF URINE or cause you to urinate more often when you first start taking it. To keep this from disturbing your sleep, try to take your dose before 6 pm. IF YOU TAKE CHOLESTYRAMINE OR COLESTIPOL, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take it with Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg. STORE DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. KEEP DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg out of the reach of children and away from pets. CONTINUE TO TAKE DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE of Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT USE DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg if you are allergic to any ingredient in Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg or to any other sulfonamide medicine (eg, sulfamethoxazole). DO NOT STOP USING DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg without first checking with your doctor. DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg MAY INTERFERE WITH CERTAIN LAB TESTS. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg. LABORATORY AND/OR MEDICAL TESTS may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg. DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS, DIZZINESS, LIGHTHEADEDNESS, OR FAINTING. Alcohol, other medicines, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg. REPORT ANY LIGHTHEADEDNESS OR FAINTING TO YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. Your risk of lightheadedness or fainting may be increased if you experience diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating, if you do not drink enough fluids, or if you are on a low-salt (sodium) diet. DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. TELL YOUR DOCTOR OR DENTIST that you take Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery. IF YOU HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, do not use nonprescription products that contain stimulants. These products may include diet pills or cold medicines. Contact your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. YOUR DOCTOR MAY HAVE ALSO PRESCRIBED A POTASSIUM SUPPLEMENT FOR YOU. If so, follow the dosing carefully. Do not start taking additional potassium on your own or change your diet to include more potassium without first checking with your doctor. DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE or a product that has potassium in it without checking with your doctor. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. USE DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg WITH CAUTION IN THE ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects. FOR WOMEN: USE OF DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg DURING PREGNANCY has resulted in birth defects or fetal and newborn death. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. Women of child-bearing age should discuss the risks and benefits of using Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg with their doctor. DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg include dizziness or headache. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg MAY RAISE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR. High blood sugar may make you feel confused, drowsy, or thirsty. It can also make you flush, breathe faster, or have a fruit-like breath odor. If these symptoms occur, TELL YOUR DOCTOR right away. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION RIGHT AWAY if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: chest pain; confusion; decrease in sexual ability; decreased urination; drowsiness; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; hoarseness; joint pain (especially in the big toe); mental or mood changes (eg, depression); muscle pain, tenderness, or cramps; nausea and vomiting; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; restlessness; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness; severe or persistent dry mouth; shortness of breath; stomach pain; swelling of the arms or legs; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual thirst, tiredness, or weakness; unusual weight gain; yellowing of the skin or eyes. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to Diovan Hct 160-12.5mg is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include confusion; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; severe or unusual dizziness or drowsiness.
DO NOT SHARE DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg for other health conditions. IF YOU WILL BE USING DIOVAN HCT 160-12.5mg FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, be sure to obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out.
