S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAMe) is derived from the amino acid methionine and is one of the most important methyl donors in the central nervous system. Methylation (donation of methyl groups) is an essential process in ensuring the proper function of a number of organ systems. SAMe is involved in numerous biochemical reactions in tissues including the liver, joints and brain. SAMe is also required for the biosynthesis of critical neurotransmitters and hormones.

Supplementing with SAMe
The manufacturing process of SAMe yields two forms, the S,S and the R,S isomers. The S,S isomer is the active form that mediates biochemical activity in the human body, whereas the R,S form is considered to be biologically inactive. The Italian SAMe used in our SAMe 200 is processed to yield the highest available percentage of the active pure S,S form on the market.

SAMe and Joint Function
SAMe may enhance cartilage protection and promote the synthesis of proteoglycans, essential components of connective tissue. Clinical studies show an ability of SAMe to enhance mobility and movement, and promote joint comfort.*

SAMe and Neural Health
SAMe-catalyzed methylation reactions promote the synthesis of neurotransmitters, which have the potential to promote enhanced mood. SAMe may also upregulate the production of phosphatidylcholine, supporting cognitive function.*

I order this for my partner, who's been taking SAMe for his mood and overall well-being for about 5 months now. We first read about it an article on depression and were intrigued by the fact that SAMe can work faster than St. John's Wort. My partner, who's not really the "supplement-taking" type, noticed a difference in his mood and energy after just a few days. I hadn't read about this as a possible benefit, but he also swears the SAMe helps keep his sinuses clear. Where other mood supplements have been purchased then stuffed to the back of the cupboard and forgotten, he has seen enough of a difference from the SAMe to make sure we always have a stock on hand.

The only negative is the unfortunate side effect of stomach-aches he got occasionally when he first started taking the SAMe. They went away over time and were helped by eating something first. The package says to take the SAMe on an empty stomach but he found that eating beforehand helped prevent the stomach-aches without seeming to diminish the effectiveness of the SAMe too much. I suggest starting with the 200 mg caps instead of the 400 mg "double strength" ones to see how your body reacts.

Everyone is different, of course, but something about the SAMe just seems to the "missing link" in terms of helping with mood and energy for my partner.

I've tried the Jarrow and Doctor's Best SAM-e and have found that the Jarrow is more effective (at least for me).

SAM-E is a game changer. Sometimes I want to go up to random strangers and say, "Try SAM-E!"

Start with 200 mg and stick with it for about a week, and then after a week go up to 400 mg. It might upset your stomach for the first day or two, but that should go away.

I take it first thing in the morning, even before I hit the snooze bar. I keep a pill and some water right by my alarm clock. You should wait at least half an hour after you take the pill. Because you should be sure to take b-12 if you're taking SAM-E, then I take b-12 right after breakfast.

You will probably notice your mood stabilizing at a higher level within a few weeks, if not sooner. I have also found that my ankles, knees, and wrists don't hurt as often, and, weirdly enough, that I don't bruise as often as I used to!

Dr. Best brand is great, every bit as good as some of the other brands that are often more expensive. Also, it's more conveniently packaged, if you travel.
