I take care of it properly, but it is just not something that will flawlessly work year after year. However, buying blades and shaving cream every few weeks adds up, so I figure this is no more expensive than shaving in the long run. Also, while I do prefer this to shaving, it does not leave skin as smooth as shaving does. Even if you go slowly and carefully, it breaks some of the hairs off at the skin. Also, be aware that the first few times are very, very painful, but it grows less painful with each use until finally you barely feel it at all. It does last a bit longer than shaving however, and over time, the hair grows in sparser and more fine. My mother has been using epilators for 10 years, and the hair on her arms is so fine and sparse that she only needs to use this every three weeks. If you can suffer through the first few times, you will be happy with this product. It's not perfect, but it sure beats shaving daily. You can use this product to remove ANY unwanted hair. Yes; you can use it EVERYWHERE. I have been using Emjoi products for 3 years. I prefer the Optima model because it does not run on batteries, and thus delivers more consistent performance than the Gentle Gold Caress. I keep my battery model for use after hurricanes. At first it is painful, but you get over this after the first few times you use it. Then it's very easy to use. You can take it anywhere with you, especially on vacation. I have had it for a year and a half or so and have used it a lot, and the motor is rotating but the discs aren't catching hair as efficiently as they used to. I do have to buy another one, but remember to exfoliate to prevent any ingrown hairs, or look out for them when they first show. I recommend some sort of ingrown hair prevention creme or lotion. I got ingrown hair bumps in my armpits, but otherwise, I love the product. I went back to shaving 2 weeks ago, and am already sick of having stumpy hairs on my legs. It is very painful at first but it gets better. I use it on my legs, arms, under-arms, and bikini area. Epilators are far superior to shaving for people like us, and the Optima is the best epilator I've used. However, I still can't get it to last more than one year. It seems to break down right before my one-year warranty is up, I get a new one, and within a year, the motor dies again. I've just ordered my 3rd Optima and have accepted that this is the price I pay to have fine hair without stubble. The more you use it, the less pain you feel since the hair thins and lessens with use. If you can afford to buy a new one every two years (before the first year is up, be sure to use that warranty and replace it!), then this product is amazing. The product life simply does not justify the expensive price. Also the product is very hard to handle, due to it's stubby design. It's painful, too. However, after using it for slightly less than a year, the Optima doesn't seem to remove the hairs anymore. The motor still works and the rotating discs spin, but the hairs are not being "tweezed". I have owned four of these, and faithfully clean them after each use, but after a year they are worthless. Just something to keep in mind when purchasing this product. It doesn't matter how well you take care of an Emjoi, it's going bash, clang, kabang, and quit within a few months. Emjoi products are painful to use and cheaply made.
