I take care of it properly, but it is just not something that will flawlessly work year after year. However, buying blades and shaving cream every few weeks adds up, so I figure this is no more expensive than shaving in the long run. Also, while I do prefer this to shaving, it does not leave skin as smooth as shaving does. Even if you go slowly and carefully, it breaks some of the hairs off at the skin. Also, be aware that the first few times are very, very painful, but it grows less painful with each use until finally you barely feel it at all. It does last a bit longer than shaving however, and over time, the hair grows in sparser and more fine. My mother has been using epilators for 10 years, and the hair on her arms is so fine and sparse that she only needs to use this every three weeks. If you can suffer through the first few times, you will be happy with this product. It's not perfect, but it sure beats shaving daily. Since this has double tweezers to remove hair, it is much faster to remove hair. I used to get waxed because it takes too long to remove hair, but this is very quick. The only problem just like any other epilator is that you get lot of ingrown hairs, where with waxing it is very neat. You get lot of ingrown hair if you have thick hair, which I do. I have used the Emjoi Optima for 5 months. After using an Epilady for about 10 years, this was easy and almost painfree in comparison. I am able to do my whole leg, while with the epilady I could only suffer through the thigh. Although nothing that rips hair out is pain free, each time I use it I say "ow" less. Today I did my knees, and it was the only time I said "OW". Next time, I'm sure it will be easier. Great buy. My hair is thinner and less coarse. You must remember that hair removal takes time, but it is much cheaper than the professional laser/electo method. Key to success is: Exfoliating often, having clean and dry (no sweat) skin, and keeping your skin moisturized with a good lotion (eg. Nivea Extra Enriched Body Lotion). Overall, for the first year results were fantastic and compared to other products Emjoi really does the job well. I had to use it once every 3 weeks, didn't mind the pain and loved the fact that I was no longer dependent on wax or shaving. However what happened afterwards was a total nightmare. After a while of using it, hairs do get so weak theyre unable to break through the skin. My legs turned into an ingrown hair disaster and looked like a science experiment gone bad. Took about 6-8 months after I stopped using it to go back to normal, but I still had to spend money for a dermatologist visit to extract ingrown hairs as doing it yourself will leave you with scarring. Shaving might be primitive and inconvenient, but it's the best way to keep the skin healthy. Please think twice before committing to an epilator!! When using this product be sure to pull the skin tight in areas where you might be a little loose or you'll get pinched and it may bleed. When you get the hang of it I'm sure you like it better than shaving because you are left completely smooth without the tenderness of waxing and the stubble of shaving. I find it is best not to use the week before my period, as it is painful and the hair breaks more. I have had mine for 1 and 1/2 years and even bought one for my mother and I love it - except now it isn't pulling the hair out as efficiently, as if it is wearing out. Comments about Emjoi Optima Hair Removal System, Model AP-99, 1 set: I love this! I recently bought the Braun system and it's pretty good, especially when compared to the EpiLady, which is horrible! The Emjoi Optima removes the hair (granted, you do have to go over it, but I do when shaving, too. Hair grows in different directions!) with very little pain. I do have some red dots on my legs afterward, but they disappear quickly. One of the tricks to getting this to work the best is exfoliating before and making sure your skin is clean and dry.
