In those days, stronger fragrance and staying power were the hallmark of "high class" colognes. We have, of course, learned a lot since then. We have to chuckle at a drug store fragrance under $20 being considered "high-tone", but it was successfully marketed as such and many English Leather gift sets have been wrapped over the years.
