I tried to use this product to help me deal with the withdrawal symptoms of PPIs. I read several recommendations for DGL to help control the acid reflux and soothe digestion. I am sorry but this product is so disgustingly nasty that it is absolutely impossible to take! I really enjoy black licorice as a flavor, so I thought I would be able to handle this. It is abhorrent and tastes nothing like licorice. I tried to hold it on my tongue against the roof of my mouth to let it dissolve because I could not bear to chew it and it made me dread swallowing because I knew I'd taste it. Finally I just gulped it down with some water and a shudder. Do not do this to yourself. If you have a sensitive-acidic stomach, the last thing you need is something that smells and tastes this yucky in your mouth. It may trigger your gag reflux (I barely controlled mine) and with extra stomach acid, vomiting is the last thing you need to deal with. However, I have decided to use REAL licorice as part of my weaning / recovery process and bought some delicious Panda black licorice soft chews on drugstore.com:[@]They're very tasty and pleasant to let slowly dissolve or chew slowly. I know because they're not DGL there's the possibility of higher blood pressure, but as I'm only eating a few of these candy chews a day I think it will be a negligible risk. I'm also using raw honey to soothe my vocal chords and throat from the acid and taking 6 mgs of melatonin at night, which has surprisingly kept away my dreaded night cough with the irritated throat and sinus troubles that develop over night if I start to reflux while sleeping. If you're trying to get off PPIs, which are only supposed to be taken for 2 weeks every 4 months, but can't because it hurts too much, DGL might work for you--if you can stand the taste. I cannot so I'm using other methods and rescue antacids as needed while I withdraw. Drinking milk also helps me (probably because it coats like the honey does) as do supplements of magnesium or a calcium/magnesium supplement - I use the GNC brand ones from this site.

This is an excellent and safe alternative to taking antacids, which I have taken almost daily for about five years. It worked the first time I took it and continues to work. Have only taken one antacid in the past month.

DGL works for my husband, but not for me. The problem with this type of therapy is that you often forget to take the tablets before having a snack.

Comments about Enzymatic Therapy DGL Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice, Tablets, 100 ea:

I can take DGL before, during, and after I eat. If before, it helps to prevent heartburn. During, it helps to digest the food. And if I wait until I get heatburn/reflux, it stops it in its tracks. AND I believe that it helps to heal the lining of my esophagus and stomach to really stop the burn and repair any damage from the acid. I sometimes chew it, and sometimes let it melt in my mouth to slowly trickle to soothe my throat, and sometmes I do both, one after the other. I've used it for years with excellent results.

Have been using DGL to prevent reflux symptoms for about 1 year. Had previously used a different brand that I'd found at the local natural foods store, but thought I'd try this one since I could get it for a little less and online. Although it works just as well at preventing heartburn, it tastes much worse. Unless you are a lover of smoky black licorice flavor, I would try other brands first.

I'm a new licorice user;and I might try other products to compare, but I was pleasantly surprised that for certain situations when my stomach hadn't beesn feeling "exactly right", this product did what antacids couldn't.

Comments about Enzymatic Therapy DGL Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice, Tablets, 100 ea:

In general I prefer to use natural remedies, so I wanted to try DGL. This looked like the best brand, and I had learned that you should allow it to dissolve in your mouth, so I chose it over another brand that came in a capsule.

Well, the first(and only!) tablet had barely hit my tongue when my gag reflex kicked in! I don't enjoy licorice candy, but this was amazingly awful. I asked my husband to try one since he is a big fan of licorice. He couldn't stand it either!

Does this product work? I can't answer that question since neither my husband or I can even look at the bottle without shuddering, much less try it again.

I've used GC Licorice from another company which tasted much better in general. I also had one tablet in this bottle that was just plain foul & had to spit it out. Must have been something wrong with it. I would not buy this product again. Very poor quality.
