I'm a single woman with a roommate, so I bought this thermometer just for adult use, and so we don't have to worry so much about germs on a shared thermometer. I chose this one because of the good reviews and the positive press from professionals.

I have used a stopwatch to time how long it takes to turn on the power, wait for the thermometer to calibrate and be ready, press the button and scan, and get a reading. Three seconds! So if I wanted to use this on a kid, I would be very pleased with the speed. I've practiced using it multiple times and gotten the same readings. The only reason I would be hesitant to use it on kids would be that it makes beeping noises. It beeps a couple times when you turn it on, then it beeps while scannning (the instruction booklet says this is so you know it's working) and beeps again when it's done. The beeps are short and not too loud but I wouldn't be surprised if they woke a sleeping child for a moment.

I read the enclosed literature carefully (which includes what to do if the forehead is sweaty, and lots of information on the different temperatures and accuracy of taking temperatures at different body parts) and have no trouble using this product and getting what I would consider accurate temperatures. If I found that I was not happy with the performance, I would either call for a replacement, or take it with me to the doctor's office and ask my doctor or nurse to show me where on the forehead to start and stop, and how fast to move.

I docked one star because of the noise and the novelty. What I mean is, most people reading these reviews are probably planning to use it on sleeping or sick kids, to whom the product is marketed, but the beeping could wake the child. As for the novelty, I think people just aren't used to taking and reading temperatures on the forehead, and it's not as simple as just sticking it in the mouth.

We bought this thermometer because the ear-based thermometer was not effective on our twins and infant. The Exergen Temporal thermometer is simple: turn on, swipe, get a reading.

I wish I had this type of thermometer before.

I've been using this thermometer often for about two years. From the beginning it was consistently inconsistent. I have to take my kids' temps three times in a row, average them in my head, and hope I'm in the ballpark. I only use it now to determine "fever or no fever" just to convince my kids they're fine when I get the gratuitous "I don't feel good." It is quick and easy, so it's good for that use. Once I determine that they probably do have a fever, I have to take it rectally to find out the exact temp. I bought it when it first came out and it was about [$]. Argh!

I'm an adult and use this on myself; however, it would be amazingly easy to use on ALL ages. I love that it can give you a read out so quickly and the display isn't a tiny peep hole that I need my bifocals for. Best money I've spent in a while.

My 10 month old son hated the tympanic thermometer even when it takes only 3 seconds to read. It would wake him up from sleep and he would be crying. This temporal thermoter is great because it does not wake him up from sleep and he does not fight it when awake. I checked my own temp with both thermometers and found no difference with the reading. The only con is that the cover is completely detached when in use and could easily be misplaced.

So easy to use and extremely accurate. In response to the reviewer above- who in their right mind waits until a child is sick to "test' a product!!! I am a fan of the rear thermometer (apparently not allowed to use any other words for this part of the body because of censors!!!) because it is most accurate - I am a medical professional and a mother. Ear thermometers are innacurate up to as much as 2 degrees which can be extremely dangerous. When I purchased this thermometer I compared it to rear and ear temperatures in both of my children and it has been within half a degree of rear temperature every time. I threw away the "convenient" ear thermometer immediately. The only con is that the screen does not light up and it beeps while taking temperature, so not as convenient for sleeping child as I thought- but still more convenient than the other options. It takes less than 30 seconds- truly amazing!
