Most of the night time sleep aids have Diphenhydramine HCl 50 mg as their active ingredient. Melatonin is a naturally occurring compound found in animals & plants. It is a natural, non-addicting hormone supplement that assists with sleep. Millions of people in the United States take it in order to get a good night's sleep after having difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep. However, beware! Melatonin may be harmful to your sleep if taken inappropriately.

Melatonin is naturally produced in your brain. It tells your body that it's nighttime and it's time to go to bed. Melatonin is a powerful hormone. Many may mistake its power for that of a sleeping pill and feel compelled to take more for better sleep. However, at the wrong dosage, melatonin may actually destroy your sleep cycle. Too much melatonin at one time may also cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, or irritability.

If you know you're going to have a major shift in sleep schedule: Because of how melatonin works, it can be beneficial for those who know they will be up late for a few nights in a row and know they will have trouble getting back to their normal sleep schedule. It also works well for jetlag.

If you're over 60 years old and are having trouble sleeping: Your body makes less melatonin as you age, so your body may need more assistance with melatonin to help you sleep better.

If you have already taken melatonin earlier that evening: Because it is so powerful, too much melatonin may actually disrupt your sleeping pattern, which may lead to your waking up in the middle of the night. Some people complain of a "melatonin hangover," which may lead to them feeling even more groggy and unrested! This happens because any residual melatonin in your system in the morning will make your body think it's still nighttime – and it will be even harder to wake up.

If you find yourself needing more than 1 mg at night to fall asleep: You may be taking too high of a dose, and you put yourself at risk of disrupting your sleep cycle. If 1 mg of melatonin isn't enough, your body may be telling you to add other methods to help your sleep.

If you've been taking melatonin for longer than two weeks: This may be a sign that your body's sleep issues come from another problem, like stress or depression, that must be addressed differently.

Before you go to bed, it may be helpful to keep the lights down and turn off a nearby television or computer, as light exposure actually inhibits your body from using its own natural melatonin.

Finally, if you are having sleep trouble, it also never hurts to start with changing your lifestyle in order to get better sleep before popping a powerful hormone supplement. These didn't work for me at all. I suppose, like all medications some people will respond better than others. I will stick to Nyquil when I am having trouble sleeping.

      Melatonin does not work for everyone and I originally thought that I was one of those people. However, after researching, I found out that there is little consistency in the amount of Melatonin that is in most tablets. I learned that the GNC brand had quality control that better assured you got what you paid for.

      I have found that GNC Melatonin is indeed a better product than other brands I have tried. Like all Melatonin, it should be used in conjunction with a sleep hygiene rountine - consistent bed time, light control, etc. I take one 3 mg tablet around 7 pm, then 2 more closer to bedtime and have found this dosage to work best for me. I have a circadian rhythm disorder and am using Melatonin to reset it so that I go to sleep a little earlier.

          I have read all the positive reviews so thought give it a try. But IT DOES NOT WORK at all. Even though I increase the dosage to 6mg, 2 tablets. Perhaps it varies on individual.

            I take three of these tablets about 30 to 45 minutes before I want to go sleep. They help me drift off easily and stay asleep until it's time to get up.                     I am in Afghanistan right now and had problems falling asleep and staying sleep during the day since I was working nights. Without it, I was only getting about 3-4 hours of sleep each day so I was a walking zombie..lol. This has drastically helped since the first time I used it and I like that it does not leave me feeling groggy the next day or whenever I wake up. I take one right before I get in the shower so that I can crash once I am done washing and all of that good stuff.

                      I take one tablet and read a book for 30 minutes until I feel tired enough to fall asleep. I don't feel groggy in the morning-just well rested. I would recommend this product to anyone that has trouble falling asleep at night.                           i have had trouble sleeping my whole life. i have used otc and rx to try to help me sleep. i tried melatonine before without positive results.. but i gave it one more try. i take one an hour before i want to fall asleep and at 2:30 when i wake up every night. i am getting the best results of my life. i am not groogy at all. finally.. i am sleeping
