Tested according to ANSI Specs S3.19-1974 The level of noise entering a person's ear, when hearing protector is worn as directed, is closely approximated by the difference between the A-weighted environmental noise level and the NRR
Example:
The environmental noise level as measured at the ear is 92 decibels db(A).
The NRR us 33 decibeks (db)
The level of the noise entering the ear is approximately 59 dB(A).
Warnings

For noise environments dominated by frequencies below 500 Hz, the C-weighted environment noise level should be used. Improper fit of this device will reduce its effectiveness in attenuating noise. Consult the instructions for proper fit. Although hearing protectors can be recommended for protection against the harmful effects of impulsive noise, the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is based on the attenuation of continuous noise and may not be an accurate indicator of the protection attainable against impulsive noise such as gunfire. This Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) calculated from the attenuation data is 25dB. HEAROS ear plugs must be properly filtered to attenuate noise effectively. Refer to directions.
I'm a very light sleeper and have tried lots of earplugs. I am commenting on the Hearos "Extreme" and not other Hearos ear plugs.
They are highly effective but they have a certain way of being inserted. 1) Roll the smaller end that goes into your ear between your fingers so it gets thinner. 2) Wet the end either with saliva or with water. (This is needed if your ear canal is not straight. It is difficult to push a piece of foam into a curved canal. If it's wet, it slides right in.) 3) Insert into your ear. All the way till it touches your ear drum will provide the best sound occlusion. The father away from the ear drum the less it occludes, so you can decide how much you want.
With it all the way to the ear drum I can't hear anything outside of the perimeter of my bed, but I can still hear my phone and alarm clock on my night stand.
I use a single pair until they don't roll down thinner easily. Eventually the foam just doesn't work as well. Sometimes my ear will itch but this is just from a buildup of ear wax during the night and I take it out and scratch or it goes away. It's not a serious problem. These have improved my sleep enormously!!!

I'm a light sleeper and have tried numerous brands of earplugs. This one is just one notch better than Mack's Ultra SafeSound in term of comfort simply because it's softer. If you are looking for an effective and comfortable brand of earplugs, look no further than these two.
The BF snores, and sometimes it's like a chainsaw. With these Hearos earplugs, I can get to sleep easier because they really do block out a lot of the noise. Great earplugs and comfy too.
I'm deployed to Afghanistan and live in a tent cooled by a LOUD air conditioner so I use these to block out the noise while I sleep. They're very soft and comfortable. Most importantly, they're highly effective. It's actually quite dramatic. I highly recommend them!
I love Hearos. I have tried many for sleeping, shooting, studying and just wanting quiet. These are the best. Others do not compare and they also have less NR rating. 33 is the highest I have found and this is it. Try them.
While sleeping, occasionally these will come out of your ear. It's not a problem. I like the fact that not all noise is cut out. I have two small kids and I have to be able to hear them, just not their screeching all the time. This can dull the noise of everyday life. I enjoy them.
I have tried all brands of earplugs available at the chain drugstores. They were either too small for my ears and fell out, didn't cut the noise enough, or simply were uncomfortable. These foam Hearos are perfect. Comfortable, and they expand to completely fill the ear canal and stop all noise. These are the ones to get to block noise while sleeping.
I use earplugs at night to drown out loud noise and/or snoring. These are terrific! Cannot find them in the stores where I shop, so THANKS to Drugstore.com!!
Ear plugs must be inserted properly for optimum performance.
With clean hands, firmly roll entire ear plug between thumb and fingers to form a thin tight cylinder
Using one hand, gently lift top of ear up to open ear canal. With other hand, insert rounded end of ear plug
With forefinger, hold ear plug in place intil it expands to form a comfortable, snug fit.
Practice of insertion is recommended. Please refer to the audio and video instructions ar Hearos.com. Discard prosuct after several uses or as soon as dirt or wax accumulates on ear plugs.
