As a homemaker I get chapped hands in the winter from frequent washing, and shun synthetic products, but it's been hard to find a truly "moisturizing" natural soap (that's an really an oxymoron anyway). This seems to be a natural detergent rather than an actual castile "soap," and it does still dry hands a bit, but I wash my hands specifically to rid them of food oils and grease! I wouldn't mind if it were something a bit less musky and deep-smelling. What used to be a rich patchouli scent now smells almost detergent like to me. It's also very thin out of the bottle, I recall it being very creamy and rich. It's gentle enough for both a hand soap and a face soap, and does not seem to strip the skin dry. I use it every day now. Good stuff. Only criticism: The pump sometimes can "shoot" the stuff out if it is semi clogged, so be careful and hold you hand over the opening when pumping it. Anyone who complains that it is too strong obviously had never used patchouli oil before - the scent is exactly what I expected and very stimulating !!! I am using this in the kitchen and the scent is incredible and lingers for a bit after use. My kids love it so much that they line up without an argument to wash their hands!
