To get this cream to work the best:
1. Apply a thick layer of cream over the site.
2 Cover the site with an occlusive dressing (so it won't let anything in or out; not absorbant). Tegaderm is one brand. You can make your own by using plastic wrap (cut an amount slightly larger than the area you plan to cover - you will need to tape down all 4 sides).
3. Apply heat to the area (heating pad, hot washcloth in a ziplock bag, etc). Heat increases absorbtion.

This cream is not meant to be rubbed in like lotion. If it can sit on the site for a good 30 minutes undisturbed (which is where the occlusive dressing comes in), then this cream will work like it should. Heat enhances the absorption and shortens the time necessary for the cream to work.

At work, I use this for pediatric IV starts - using an occlusive dressing and a heat pack makes it possible for me to place pain-free IV's in 10 minutes.

Personally, I also used this for my laser tattoo removal. I applied a thick layer of cream to my tattoo, covered the area with plastic wrap and taped down all 4 sides, and used a heat pad. I let it work for over 30 minutes and then underwent a pain-free laser procedure.

My Mom suggested I use this when I had Shingles. It made all the difference in the world (in addition to Valtrex and medicine for the pain). I have very sensitive skin and I tolerated it very well. I think it is an excellent product.

I use LMX cream before changing out my young daughter's canula site (she has type 1 diabetes). I apply a small amount and rub in and let it sit for about 20 minutes. It takes the edge off the sting from the canual needle. I have also used this product in the crook of her arm before she has to have blood drawn. It works great and the price here is literally half what I was paying in the grocery store!
Dozens of parents have raved about this to me (I run a nonprofit diabetes org). I highly recommend using this product (on the advice of your doctor, of course) to help young children deal with shots and canulas!
