Chemical Name: AMLODIPINE (am-LOE-di-peen) and BENAZEPRIL (ben-AZ-e-pril)
Lotrel 5-10mg is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and a calcium channel blocker combination used to treat high blood pressure.
WARNING: Do not take Lotrel 5-10mg if you are pregnant. Lotrel 5-10mg can cause injury and possibly death to a developing fetus when used during pregnancy. Talk with your doctor at once if you think that you are pregnant. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Lotrel 5-10mg. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking aliskiren, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) (eg, losartan), aldosterone blockers (eg, eplerenone), dextran sulfate, iron given by injection (eg, iron dextran), MTOR inhibitors (eg, everolimus), potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone, triamterene), potassium supplements, trimethoprim, certain gold-containing medicines (eg, sodium aurothiomalate), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen, indomethacin), diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), vasopressin receptor antagonists (eg, conivaptan), imidazoles (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole), lithium, sulfonylureas (eg, glyburide), thiopurines (eg, azathioprine), or other medicines for high blood pressure or heart failure. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a collagen vascular disease (eg, systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE or lupus], hardening of skin disease [scleroderma]), bone marrow suppression, low blood counts, narrowing or hardening of the arteries of the brain, high blood potassium levels, low blood sodium levels, dehydration, low blood volume, low blood pressure, allergies, pregnancy or if you are able to become pregnant, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart problems (eg, heart failure, aortic stenosis, recent heart attack, angina, coronary artery disease), blood vessel problems, blood flow problems, bone marrow problems, kidney problems (eg, renal artery stenosis), liver problems, a kidney transplant, or diabetes. Tell your doctor if you are on a low salt diet, if you are receiving treatments to reduce sensitivity to bee or wasp stings, you are scheduled to have surgery or receive anesthesia, or if you are receiving kidney dialysis or apheresis. USE OF LOTREL 5-10mg IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have severe kidney problems, if you are pregnant, or if you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or unusual hoarseness). Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Lotrel 5-10mg.
Follow the directions for using Lotrel 5-10mg provided by your doctor. An additional patient information leaflet is available with Lotrel 5-10mg. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this information. TAKE LOTREL 5-10mg with or without food. GRAPEFRUIT AND GRAPEFRUIT JUICE MAY INCREASE the risk of side effects from Lotrel 5-10mg. Talk with your doctor before including grapefruit or grapefruit juice in your diet. STORE LOTREL 5-10mg at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. KEEP LOTREL 5-10mg out of the reach of children and away from pets. DO NOT TAKE MORE THAN PRESCRIBED unless advised to do so by your doctor. Take Lotrel 5-10mg regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking Lotrel 5-10mg at the same time each day will help you to remember. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF LOTREL 5-10mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is within 12 hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE LOTREL 5-10mg if you have had an allergic reaction to any ingredient in Lotrel 5-10mg or any ACE inhibitor (eg, lisinopril). DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. IT MAY TAKE UP TO 2 WEEKS to receive the full benefits from Lotrel 5-10mg. DO NOT STOP taking Lotrel 5-10mg without checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including blood potassium levels, blood pressure, and kidney function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking Lotrel 5-10mg. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Lotrel 5-10mg. LOTREL 5-10mg MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS, LIGHTHEADEDNESS, OR FAINTING; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit or stand up slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Lotrel 5-10mg with caution. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Lotrel 5-10mg. DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE or potassium supplement without checking with your doctor. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS WHILE TAKING LOTREL 5-10mg and avoid engaging in activities that cause excessive sweating. Dehydration, excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea may lead to a fall in blood pressure. Contact your health care provider at once if any of these occur. A PERSISTENT, UNPRODUCTIVE COUGH may occur. Tell your doctor if this occurs. Recovery is usually rapid when the medicine is stopped. LOTREL 5-10mg MAY CAUSE A SERIOUS SIDE EFFECT CALLED ANGIOEDEMA. Contact your doctor at once if you develop swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; or hoarseness. PATIENTS WHO TAKE MEDICINE FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after starting treatment. Be sure to take your medicine even if you may not feel "normal". Tell your doctor if you develop any new symptoms. LOTREL 5-10mg MAY NOT WORK AS WELL IN BLACK PATIENTS. They may also be at greater risk of side effects (eg, angioedema). Contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse. WHILE YOU ARE USING LOTREL 5-10mg, brush and floss your teeth carefully. Also, have regular dental check-ups. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING LOTREL 5-10mg IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: DO NOT USE LOTREL 5-10mg IF YOU ARE PREGNANT. It may cause fetal or newborn death. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. LOTREL 5-10mg IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Lotrel 5-10mg.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking Lotrel 5-10mg include dizziness; headache; or persistent, dry cough. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION RIGHT AWAY if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: blisters or sores in the mouth, nose, throat, or on the genitals; dark urine; decreased urination; fainting; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; irregular, fast, or slow heartbeat; loss of appetite; muscle cramps, pain, or weakness; new or worsening chest pain (eg, longer, more often, more severe); pale stools; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; severe or persistent dizziness or lightheadedness; severe or persistent nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting; severe stomach pain; swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles; symptoms of heart attack (eg, chest, jaw, or left arm pain; numbness of an arm or leg; sudden, severe headache or vomiting); tender, bleeding, or swollen gums; unexplained weight gain; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual weakness or fatigue; wheezing; yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to Lotrel 5-10mg is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty swallowing or breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, hands, eyes, throat, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, fast heartbeat, flushing of the skin, lightheadedness, or loss of consciousness.
DO NOT SHARE LOTREL 5-10mg with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE LOTREL 5-10mg for other health conditions.
