A Long History
The namesake of the Max Factor brand hailed from Russia, but made an impressive reputation for himself in Hollywood. Born in 1872, Max Factor the man tended to the stars as an Oscar-winning makeup and wig-making wizard, but he wasn't interested in restricting such glamor and artistry to the realm of celebrities like Ava Gardner, Marlene Dietrich, and Judy Garland. He began selling cosmetic products in the 1910s, pioneering the availability of personal-beauty tools for everyday women. (So influential was this creative entrepreneur that we essentially owe the very word "makeup" to him, as he popularized it in the fledgling years of his mass-market business.)
Among the company's early breakthroughs was the Society Make-up kit, released in 1920; the Beauty Calibrator of 1932, which minutely mapped a person's face in order to target shading for maximum aesthetic effect; the Pan-Cake Makeup of 1935, originally concocted to improve actors' appearances in the medium of Technicolor; and the first retail-market concealer, Erace, introduced in 1954. Max Factor passed away at 66 in 1938, but his brainchild lives on - bigger than ever.

Legendary luminaries of the silver screen were early beneficiaries of the Max Factor beautification approach, but the brand's founder never wanted his innovations solely available to the rich and famous. You can draw from those decades and decades of experimentation yourself - right in your own home, too, and not with a ridiculous price tag.
