without this product i would be unable to BF my son. it helps with flat and inverted nipples. it is tricky to get it to stay on and bring baby to breast but it does work like a charm

Comments about Medela Contact Nipple Shield, Medium, 24mm, 1 ea:

I'm a Board Certified Lactation Consultant and I use 24mm Contact Shields with some of my clients. This product is not meant to "cure soreness" nor should a new mother prescribe it for herself. It should only be used when a Board Certified Lactation Consultant has done a full in person consultation and deems the use of these shields appropriate for the situation.

I use them in cases of shallow latch, when we cannot get the baby to latch more deeply on his own, or in cases of preterm or small-for-dates babies when they cannot latch well or deeply enough.

When prescribed by a trained professional, these are great products, but when simply thrown at a new mother because "she has soreness" without the professional assessing the situation, watching a feed, doing an oral-digital suck assessment and determining the reason for the soreness, they are NOT appropriate for all situations.

MOST new mothers will never need a nipple shield, but when a professional Lactation Consultant determines the use is appropriate and continues to weigh the baby and the mother is pumping to make up for any continuing issues, the use may be justified.
They are not a "cure all" for every nursing problem and one needs to see a Lactation Consultant to determine size and use of this product.

Comments about Medela Contact Nipple Shield, Medium, 24mm, 1 ea:

One of my nipples was flat and another one was too small for my baby to latch on, I was desparate as I wanted to breastfeed exclusively,so I started using the shield at the hospital and still using (baby is 2 months old). Without it I'd have had to give up on breasfeeding I'm afraid. 24 mm seems to be too big for my baby's mouth so I use 20 mm. Breastfeeding consultants say I should start slowly feeding without it, but my baby just gets frustrated that is why i continue using it.Whatever works for my baby! It is a bit annoing that you have to wash it every time before and after the feeding with a special mild soap, but it's better than to wash bottles :)

Comments about Medela Contact Nipple Shield, Medium, 24mm, 1 ea:

These were a lifesaver for me. I did natural childbirth and was insistent on breast feeding 100%, no supplements. No issues breastfeeding from day one with first child and with my son born in June, he just would not latch on to save his life. I was completely depressed, after one day of him not eating and the lactation consultant at the hospital no help, I finally caved and gave him formula. I started pumping every two hours when I got home and bottle feeding him the breast milk, but was still very depressed not to be able to bond through breastfeeding. My friend bought me one of these and he latched on immediately! I bought several to keep in various areas of the house, diaper bag etc. My advice is to keep persistent with trying to get baby to latch on without each time, I waited too long and he will not breastfeed without it now, but its better than pumping every two hours!

The only way I was able to breast feed was thanks to the nipple shield which was given to me by my lactation specialist. I used it for six months of breast feedings with no problems. Order more than one as they do wear out -- just like bottle nipples, plus it's nice to have one set for the diaper bag!

Easy to use, easy to clean, and an absolute lifesaver for inverted/flat nipples. My first nipple shield was given to me by a Lactation Consultant, and I've been breastfeeding with minimal problems since. I would enthusiastically recommend this to anyone! But, please have a Lactation Consultant show you how to use it.

          This is awesome!
It saved breastfeeding for me, as my newborn son has a clamping jaw, and had chewed me raw and bruised. This shield allows you to still nurse, without pain, while you heal. It takes only a few days. It's hard to give it up (for you AND baby) but frankly, who cares if you use it the entire time? I'm not using it now, but may need it every once in a while, especially when he gets teeth.
and do yourself a favor, buy more than 1! if you can't find it (easy to miss cuz it's see-thru) and your baby is screaming, you will cry too cuz a screaming baby does not want to relearn latching at that point.
          good luck!
