About 3 months ago, I had a laceration on my face that required stitches. It was a pretty deep gash, and all the while that I had the stitches in, I was really concerned about scarring. Sure enough, once the stitches were removed, I had a pretty nasty line across my cheek that I was immediately self-conscious about. Upon the recommendation of both my surgeon and family doctor, I tried Mederma.

Mederma is very easy to use. It suggests application 3 to 5 times a day, and I admittedly took it a little further and applied it at least a half dozen times every day. It's pretty innocuous- apply conservatively and massage it in. My doctor recommended that I massage the gel in with "gentle" force, as it would help break down the scar fibers. It does take a little bit of time to see results-I still apply it daily, but WOW what a difference!! The scar is now barely noticeable, and I am not self-conscious about it in the least! My only regret is that I don't have "before" and "after" pictures to share.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone. The biggest key is BE CONSISTENT with your application and be patient. It delivered what it promised and, to me, was better than advertised.

Okay, so even with all the reviews read - some positive, some negative - I decided to try Mederma because it is the number one doctor recommended treatment for scars (as advertised).
I have a cat at home, that still has his claws in... so yea, go figure... I have scratches, and scabs , and thus little scars a-l-l over my body. One scar, in particular, really stands out. It's on the uppermost part of my arm, right by my shoulder. People ask me all the time, what happened to my arm... It is that obvious. I therefore decided to attempt to treat the scar, and yes, thought I would give Mederma a try.
I used Mederma for two week until I was forced to stop using it. As I type this review, my entire body is ITCHING, not just where I applied the treatment, but everywhere. Yes, very odd, but true. I have little bumps all over my body (some in clusters, others spread out). They resemble what is commonly known as a heat rash, if anyone is familiar with that. The areas to which I actually applied the Mederma have huge inflammated reddish rashes over them – quite gross looking, really – which itch as well.
I did casually consult with my physician, and she told me that the "rash" definitely seemed like something external (that would be caused by the use of Mederma or something applied to the skin, but that it was nothing to have sleepless nights over, that is, it shouldn't cause any serious health problems). My doctor basically advised me to stop using Mederma, and mentioned to me that there really aren't any products wholly proven to get rid of scars. I know that some people will disagree completely because Mederma, or Vitamin E, or Cocoa Butter, etcetera has worked for them, and I don't disbelieve it. The Mederma was actually making my skin peel, which I can imagine, in effect, was maybe eroding the scarred tissue to promote new and healthy skin to regenerate. So undoubtedly, this product seems to work at minimizing or reducing the appearance of scars. Note well also, that the area around my scar got lighter. I have to say that this isn't particularly attractive on a person with darker complexion like myself, because, in my case, the discolored skin was practically as noticeable as the scar itself... Not a good outcome, however my husband did say that my scar appeared lighter as well, but this might have just been purely psychological.
I've stopped using Mederma for almost two full days now, and my skin still itches, and the little pimples are still very visible and still very much there – sliding your hand over them is the worst, because they feel so much worse than they really look. If the itching doesn't subside and/or if the pimples don't go away within a week, I will most definitely seek out my doctor for her professional help.
I will not, not recommend Mederma, because it might have worked wonders for my scars, if it weren't for my skin's severe reaction to it. But, I will caution those interested to test the product on a very small area of skin for at least a few days, to make sure there is no negative reaction to it, before applying it all over.
I read somewhere that there is supposedly a money back guarantee on Mederma, so I am going to seek out more information on that to hopefully get my money back for this product that I will definitely not be using again.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I am surprised to see so many negative reviews. Especially about Mederma causing redness/itchiness. I have extremely sensitive skin, and Mederma does not irritate it in the least. I have been using Mederma for about 4 weeks now on a dog bite scar on my face. I started using it when the scar was pretty new, and I have seen MAJOR improvement. I only put it on once or twice a day, not three or four as is recommended, but I'm still getting great results. The scar has faded dramatically and people hardly notice it anymore. As someone else mentioned, a little bit of this stuff goes a long way.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I was in a car accident three years ago, which caused me to have to undergo 8 surgeries on my ankle, elbow, and shoulder. Reconstruction of my ankle/foot required a skin graft from my thigh and a bone graft from my hip. I am full of scars.
After being released from the hospital after surgeries 1 through 5, and as scars formed, I used Mederma. Now, I don't know what the graft area would have looked like had I not used it. But after my 7th surgery, which required a parallel incision on my elbow to one from a previous surgery, life caught up to me and I did not take the time to use Mederma any longer. So I now have two parallel scars along my elbow - one that I used Mederma on for 2 months, and one that I did not. The one that I did not is still (3 years later) red and very noticeable. The first scar is white, thin, and unobtrusive. Not gone, but WAY better than the other one. Since I rarely look at my elbows, I keep forgetting to use the Mederma for the second one, but one day...

Not much success here on older surgery scars or stretch marks. Perhaps it works on brand new scars? However, any doctor can usually prescribe a similar, less expensive, topical solution.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

While I don't have much success with this product on very old acne scars, it's unmatched at getting rid of those red or brown marks left over from new acne. Neutrogena has an acne mark fading product on the market, but it simply doesn't turn the skin over as fast as Mederma. With several applications a day, the discoloration is replaced by new skin within a couple of days, not weeks. For this reason, I will always repurchase this gel.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I am a 25 year-old with olive skin, and I have some dark acne scars on my face. I decided to try this product to see if it would help fade the acne marks. I have been using the product for about 6 weeks (once to twice a day, even though it says 3-4 times). I have sensitive skin, and Mederma does not irritate it. I have noticed a definite GRADUAL fading of the scars and my skin tone is evening out. I think the product does visibly help my scars, but it's no overnight miracle. I have one very dark scar on my cheek, and I'd say it's faded a couple of shades in 6 weeks. It may take several more weeks or months to make it go away -- or it may never completely go away. There are alternatives such as glycolic acid peels for more dramatic results for getting rid of surface scars, but I think this is a great (and gentle) way to gradually fade scars and rejuvenate skin over time.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

On a medium sized (1/3 inch) circular raised scar (deep in the skin), it did almost nothing for this scar after at least 6 months of use. I DID notice, however, that the non-scarred skin around the scar became noticeably lighter compared to the skin where the ointment did not cover. I also tried it on a small indented acne scar on my face that began as a scar, and this one disappeared completely. I think for smallish certain types of scars (where there isn't a significant amount of actual scar tissue), this works. Both of the scars were new.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I think the effectiveness of skin products really depend on your skin type. (I have Irish fair skin with a tendency toward dryness.) I've tried other 5 star (and far more expensive) stuff for scars and stretch marks, and it didn't work at all. This product has significantly lightened a deep surgery scar on my hip, and has (surprise!) worked wonders on 7+ year old pregnancy stretch marks too!

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I was in a very bad car accident which left an ugly big scar on my face. I had heard about Mederma and other products for scars. I was so depressed, thinking that nothing was going to work on my scar. I bought this lotion and started applying it every day for a whole week - maybe twice a day. This product works miracles! My scar is almost not noticeable. I'm so happy that Mederma really did work for me. I thank this product; when I came home from the hospital and I saw my face, I honestly felt suicidal. I looked so ugly, and now it's almost gone and I feel happy with no insecurities. Thank you...awesome product!

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

If you have realistic expectations, Mederma is a miracle! I had gotten a third degree burn from an exhaust pipe and it left a big, raised, purple scar on my leg. I didn't start to use Mederma until about a year later, and after only 3 days I could see a small difference in color. I just finished the tube last week and now the scar is barely visible. Also my dad who has an open heart surgery scar from two different surgeries uses it, and says although his scar is still raised it helped a lot with the color.

Amazing so far. I've been using Mederma for 3 days and already see major improvement on a rather new (but pretty dark) acne scar. No irritation or stinging. Well worth trying.
