About 3 months ago, I had a laceration on my face that required stitches. It was a pretty deep gash, and all the while that I had the stitches in, I was really concerned about scarring. Sure enough, once the stitches were removed, I had a pretty nasty line across my cheek that I was immediately self-conscious about. Upon the recommendation of both my surgeon and family doctor, I tried Mederma.

Mederma is very easy to use. It suggests application 3 to 5 times a day, and I admittedly took it a little further and applied it at least a half dozen times every day. It's pretty innocuous- apply conservatively and massage it in. My doctor recommended that I massage the gel in with "gentle" force, as it would help break down the scar fibers. It does take a little bit of time to see results-I still apply it daily, but WOW what a difference!! The scar is now barely noticeable, and I am not self-conscious about it in the least! My only regret is that I don't have "before" and "after" pictures to share.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone. The biggest key is BE CONSISTENT with your application and be patient. It delivered what it promised and, to me, was better than advertised.

Okay, so even with all the reviews read - some positive, some negative - I decided to try Mederma because it is the number one doctor recommended treatment for scars (as advertised).
I have a cat at home, that still has his claws in... so yea, go figure... I have scratches, and scabs , and thus little scars a-l-l over my body. One scar, in particular, really stands out. It's on the uppermost part of my arm, right by my shoulder. People ask me all the time, what happened to my arm... It is that obvious. I therefore decided to attempt to treat the scar, and yes, thought I would give Mederma a try.
I used Mederma for two week until I was forced to stop using it. As I type this review, my entire body is ITCHING, not just where I applied the treatment, but everywhere. Yes, very odd, but true. I have little bumps all over my body (some in clusters, others spread out). They resemble what is commonly known as a heat rash, if anyone is familiar with that. The areas to which I actually applied the Mederma have huge inflammated reddish rashes over them – quite gross looking, really – which itch as well.
I did casually consult with my physician, and she told me that the "rash" definitely seemed like something external (that would be caused by the use of Mederma or something applied to the skin, but that it was nothing to have sleepless nights over, that is, it shouldn't cause any serious health problems). My doctor basically advised me to stop using Mederma, and mentioned to me that there really aren't any products wholly proven to get rid of scars. I know that some people will disagree completely because Mederma, or Vitamin E, or Cocoa Butter, etcetera has worked for them, and I don't disbelieve it. The Mederma was actually making my skin peel, which I can imagine, in effect, was maybe eroding the scarred tissue to promote new and healthy skin to regenerate. So undoubtedly, this product seems to work at minimizing or reducing the appearance of scars. Note well also, that the area around my scar got lighter. I have to say that this isn't particularly attractive on a person with darker complexion like myself, because, in my case, the discolored skin was practically as noticeable as the scar itself... Not a good outcome, however my husband did say that my scar appeared lighter as well, but this might have just been purely psychological.
I've stopped using Mederma for almost two full days now, and my skin still itches, and the little pimples are still very visible and still very much there – sliding your hand over them is the worst, because they feel so much worse than they really look. If the itching doesn't subside and/or if the pimples don't go away within a week, I will most definitely seek out my doctor for her professional help.
I will not, not recommend Mederma, because it might have worked wonders for my scars, if it weren't for my skin's severe reaction to it. But, I will caution those interested to test the product on a very small area of skin for at least a few days, to make sure there is no negative reaction to it, before applying it all over.
I read somewhere that there is supposedly a money back guarantee on Mederma, so I am going to seek out more information on that to hopefully get my money back for this product that I will definitely not be using again.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I have a south Indian complexion, and scars are very dark on me. I used this cream for about 3 months on several small, closely placed scars on my legs, some of which were the unfortunate result of electrolysis. Because each scar was quite small (<1/4" each) and they were so close together, I spread the cream across the whole area, about 6" x2". The scars did lighten, but to my surprise the skin between the scars lightened even more. I was so focused on examining the specific scars close up, that I failed to notice the normal skin lightening until it was quite obvious. It also left the skin scaly and itchy, even 2 months after STOPPING use of the cream. Now I have a large stripes of lightened skin across the front of my legs, with red splotches from flaking and scratching, and on which the original scars are still visible (albeit lighter than at the start).

I should also mention that I had tested the cream on a smaller, less noticeable scar on my arm for about 6 weeks before addressing my leg scars, and did not notice the untoward effects on the smaller scar.

So, in sum, I would suggest using the cream only in a very localized, targeted way for SMALL scars (which, admittedly, is what the package instructs). And if you have dark skin, use caution not to allow the cream to extend onto unscarred skin. (This was NOT mentioned in the instructions.) I also wish I had tested the cream on a small patch of NORMAL skin, not just scarred skin.

I have used a whole tube of merderma cream then ordered gel.
I am still using it so am not too sure of the results.
I feel it has helped on my tummy tuck scars, it has flattened the the scar as it was weeks after the surgery, I am not sure if it is natural healing process or the cream, but I see the redness fade fast and I still have the line of scar ; it feels smooth and I feel like it is working but not sure about a spot of Keloid I have as it has not changed at all.
I would love to see the results after I am done with the gel.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I had a small scar removed from my upper lip. My surgeon suggested that I use an over-the-counter anti-scar cream to prevent the site from evolving into a new and larger scar. I had read positive reviews of Mederma, so I spent [$] on a tiny tube of it and used it faithfully for over a month. I could not detect any improvement from using Mederma. In fact, it seemed to be provoking the scar into growing, not shrinking. I switched to the Scar Away sheets and gel, and almost immediately noticed a big improvement. The scar is fading fast, shrinking in size, and is hardly noticeable. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Mederma. Other people appear to have enjoyed better luck with this product, and you may as well.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

There have been quite a few reviews on Mederma claiming that it does not work and is a waste of money - I, however, found this to be completely untrue. I am a 14 year old girl who received a nasty, large acne scar just above my eyebrow after getting rid of a cystic pimple. The pimple may have been gone, but it certainly left it's mark. I dealt with it for about a month before growing angry with having to conceal it everywhere I went - for a while, I wasn't even aware that it was a scar. I thought it'd just go away. But, it turned out it needed some help to do it. I tried Mederma despite the put-downs and within a week I noticed my scar becoming less and less red. It also retracted a little, making the scar smaller. Unfortunately, Merderma encourages skin renewal by drying the scar. This made is difficult to cover with makeup. I resolved this by moisturzing before an application. This held up for an entire school day - 8 hours. I say: Try Merderma! It's working for me, why wouldn't it for you?

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I bought this for a cut in my hand that required 7 stitches. After 2 months, the scar was red and still swollen. I bought Mederma because it was less expensive than the scar tapes which were almost double the price. I started applying this on Tuesday evening. I woke up the next day and saw a slight difference already. It is 6 days now and I see a significant reduction in the redness, swelling of the scar. I have also applied this on an old (20 yr old) scar/keloid on my leg and I see a softening of the old scar and it seems to blend in a bit more with the skin. Is it myimagination or the stretch marks on my leg next to the scar fading? hmmmm

They recommend 2-3 applications per day but I applied more often the first few days even bringing it to work, and only applied once yesterday but still see a difference.

The one thing that is slightly negative is the tingling and slight soreness and burning in the area after application. It wasn't too painful and it went away but I would not recommend this for new scars or scars that have not completely closed just for that reason.

Mederma works wonderfully on new scars and pretty well on old ones. I have a few scars from baking and from other activities and I have seen a drastic reduction in all of my scars after using this product. I am really bad about applying it according to the directions and only do so about once a day (and usually not on the weekends) but I have still seen results. If you start applying it the day you get a scar your results will be amazing! Older scars do take some time to fade and none of them have reduced as much as the new scars but that is expected. Overall, great product that was recommended by my dermatologist.
