About 3 months ago, I had a laceration on my face that required stitches. It was a pretty deep gash, and all the while that I had the stitches in, I was really concerned about scarring. Sure enough, once the stitches were removed, I had a pretty nasty line across my cheek that I was immediately self-conscious about. Upon the recommendation of both my surgeon and family doctor, I tried Mederma.

Mederma is very easy to use. It suggests application 3 to 5 times a day, and I admittedly took it a little further and applied it at least a half dozen times every day. It's pretty innocuous- apply conservatively and massage it in. My doctor recommended that I massage the gel in with "gentle" force, as it would help break down the scar fibers. It does take a little bit of time to see results-I still apply it daily, but WOW what a difference!! The scar is now barely noticeable, and I am not self-conscious about it in the least! My only regret is that I don't have "before" and "after" pictures to share.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone. The biggest key is BE CONSISTENT with your application and be patient. It delivered what it promised and, to me, was better than advertised.

Okay, so even with all the reviews read - some positive, some negative - I decided to try Mederma because it is the number one doctor recommended treatment for scars (as advertised).
I have a cat at home, that still has his claws in... so yea, go figure... I have scratches, and scabs , and thus little scars a-l-l over my body. One scar, in particular, really stands out. It's on the uppermost part of my arm, right by my shoulder. People ask me all the time, what happened to my arm... It is that obvious. I therefore decided to attempt to treat the scar, and yes, thought I would give Mederma a try.
I used Mederma for two week until I was forced to stop using it. As I type this review, my entire body is ITCHING, not just where I applied the treatment, but everywhere. Yes, very odd, but true. I have little bumps all over my body (some in clusters, others spread out). They resemble what is commonly known as a heat rash, if anyone is familiar with that. The areas to which I actually applied the Mederma have huge inflammated reddish rashes over them – quite gross looking, really – which itch as well.
I did casually consult with my physician, and she told me that the "rash" definitely seemed like something external (that would be caused by the use of Mederma or something applied to the skin, but that it was nothing to have sleepless nights over, that is, it shouldn't cause any serious health problems). My doctor basically advised me to stop using Mederma, and mentioned to me that there really aren't any products wholly proven to get rid of scars. I know that some people will disagree completely because Mederma, or Vitamin E, or Cocoa Butter, etcetera has worked for them, and I don't disbelieve it. The Mederma was actually making my skin peel, which I can imagine, in effect, was maybe eroding the scarred tissue to promote new and healthy skin to regenerate. So undoubtedly, this product seems to work at minimizing or reducing the appearance of scars. Note well also, that the area around my scar got lighter. I have to say that this isn't particularly attractive on a person with darker complexion like myself, because, in my case, the discolored skin was practically as noticeable as the scar itself... Not a good outcome, however my husband did say that my scar appeared lighter as well, but this might have just been purely psychological.
I've stopped using Mederma for almost two full days now, and my skin still itches, and the little pimples are still very visible and still very much there – sliding your hand over them is the worst, because they feel so much worse than they really look. If the itching doesn't subside and/or if the pimples don't go away within a week, I will most definitely seek out my doctor for her professional help.
I will not, not recommend Mederma, because it might have worked wonders for my scars, if it weren't for my skin's severe reaction to it. But, I will caution those interested to test the product on a very small area of skin for at least a few days, to make sure there is no negative reaction to it, before applying it all over.
I read somewhere that there is supposedly a money back guarantee on Mederma, so I am going to seek out more information on that to hopefully get my money back for this product that I will definitely not be using again.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I have used this product for approximately four weeks on a new scar with no results at all. It was a total waste of money. I have stopped using it due to the fact that it smells absolutely horrible and you are supposed to apply it four times a day, which is too much for me.

I don't think this product did anything for my scar. The product is a light consistency that seems to rub off very easily. Neosporin works much better for scars than this product.

I have a terrible red raised scar on my hand, and this worked wonders! I waited until my scar was a little old before using it, and I still had great results!

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I had facial laser surgery 2 years ago and it did not completely remove all scars and pits (not willing to do a 2nd treatment due to cost), but using Mederma (2 - 3 times per day AND leaving it on for half hour each time) is causing old scars to fade and some pits to fill in. It just takes time.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

The cost for this product is too much for something that doesnt work. If you have new scars and you use this you may think it works, but scars heal with time. I tried it on a scar I have on my face. It made bumps on my skin, and the scar became itchy and red. I cannot use it and go out with it. Also, the film left when it dries makes your skin easy to rub off and dry out.

I used this product for a surgical keyloid scar that I have. Not only did my scar not improve, but my skin became itchy and irritated. I have an olive complextion and the skin around my scar where the Mederma had touched turned white. Now I have a red scar with a white circle around it. I do NOT recommend this product.

I have used this product for a couple of different scars, most recently on an injury on my face that required eight stitches. While it does not make the scar disappear, there is definite improvement in the color and texture. It is hard to say how much would have improved on its own, but when I used it on an old scar it improved that one as well.

I am into using my 3rd tubes but I didn't see any result. I used it on my old acne scars and hoping it would show some improvement but it was disappointing. I also used it on my stretch marks after delivering a baby and thinking this might work on new scars and again I was disappointed. It has been 10 months now, I still see stretch marks. Pricey for some product that don't deliver what they preach.

Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I had multiple scars following a severe motor vehicle accident. I was initially prescribed Mederma by a physician that, apparently, wasn't aware of more effective methods. Mederma did nothing. I happened to be aware of another product that I had used a few years prior when I had a mole removed by a plastic surgeon. I would highly recommend a prescription for Cica-Care Silicone dressing. It's a gel "sheet" that you place on the scar. Still not cheap, but the silicone sheet is reusable and FAR more effective, especially for hypertophic and keloid scars. I found that Mederma was a high expense with absolutely minimal benefit. Comments about Mederma Skin Care for Scars, Topical Gel, 1.76 oz:

I have multiple stretch marks from my pregnancy. I started using Mederma about a month and a half ago. My Stretch marks have faded, but you can still see some fine lines (white) I will have to buy another tube or two in order to fade them the rest of the way. (Hopefully they will disappear) But I wish that the tube were bigger. That is a lot of money for such a small tube!!
