Air Care

 – When you think about the allergens that can cause you uncomfortable symptoms, you likely picture things found in the great outdoors, but in actuality, there are just as many potential allergens lurking in your home. From pollen that blows in through the windows to dust that accumulates in nooks and crannies, these fine particulates can all increase the risk of allergy symptom flare-ups. At drugstore.com, we have a variety of solutions to problems with indoor air quality in our assortment of air care products.

Allergy Friendly Filters for Your HVAC System

Many of the fine particulates that are present in the air circulate through your home's heating and cooling system. Inside of your furnace are filters that are designed to capture some of these particulates so that there are fewer present in the air in your home.

To improve the level of filtration and remove even more allergens, you can upgrade to allergy-friendly air filters. These filters are engineered to trap a greater number of particles when air passes through them. The filters must be changed periodically; most can be used for about one to three months before they must be removed and replaced with a brand new filter.

When you're shopping for filters, you'll need to know what size fits into your system. The owner's manual for your system can provide you with the information or you can measure your current filter.

How Do Ionic Purifiers Work?

Ionic air purifiers help reduce the number of fine particulates in the air through a method that is different than traditional filtration. These standalone devices emit negatively charged particles called ions. The ions float through the air and become attracted to positively charged fine particulates.

Once an ion attaches to a particle, it becomes too heavy to remain suspended in the air. As a result, it no longer circulates through the home and is less likely to trigger allergy symptoms. Experts recommend that people who use ionic purifiers regularly vacuum and wipe down hard surfaces in their home to remove allergens.

Sanitizers for Fighting Germs

People who are prone to illnesses like colds and flu may wish to use an air sanitizer in their home to decrease the number of germs in the air and lower their risk of becoming ill. A sanitizer is an appliance that emits ultraviolet energy that has the power to kill bacteria and viruses that are present in the air. The most effective models can eliminate up to 99.9 percent of the germs with which they come in contact.
