They have been used for generations, for the very simple reasons that they are effective, convenient and soothing. The use of cold and hot packs has been shown to be effective to help relieve pain and help increase mobility, either for first aid after an injury or for long-term therapy. The tradition of applying moist heat to injuries or chronically painful areas may have a long history, but the methods have become even more convenient and effective. Today's hot water bottles come in a variety of styles and systems, allowing you to choose which works best for your personal needs.

How Moist Therapy Works

Water holds heat much more effectively than air - the density of liquid allows it to slowly transfer heat to surrounding areas. It is this wonderful well of warmth that gradually lends its heat to your sore body that provides the special nature of this therapy. Moist heat helps in three ways: it stimulates the nerve endings in order to help decrease the sensation of pain; it helps to relax the muscles and connective tissues to increase flexibility; and most importantly, moist heat helps to dilate blood vessels. Moist heat therapy has also been recommended for menstrual cramps, sinus infections, temporary relief from migraine headaches and other systemic sources of pain.

Convenience and Portability

Who hasn't enjoyed the wonderful experience of a long, warm bath? After a long day full of tension and concern, or a strenuous work-out, there is nothing better than a soak in warm water to help relax and soothe sore muscles and, best of all, restore a feeling of calmness. Unfortunately, it isn't always possible to have access to a warm bath or a hot tub. With hot water bottles, the comfort of moist heat therapy can be enjoyed almost anytime and anywhere - you can choose the style of the hot water bottle and the method of heating that works best for you. Medicine and health issues that are muscle related are a good cause for moist heat therapy, but even relaxation after a long, tense day is certainly a worthwhile cause for personal comfort and care. There are a variety of styles of moist therapy aids available, from the traditional hot water bottles to electric pads and microwaveable hot packs and patches. If you are pregnant, or have heart disease or any circulatory problems, however, before you begin to use a moist heat system, consult with your physician to make sure that it is compatible for your condition.
