Where Do Warts Come from?

Warts are typically painless skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body, though they are usually found on the hands and feet. Common warts occur most often on the hands or fingers. Those found on the bottom of the feet are known as plantar warts. Warts are caused by different strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) which almost everyone is exposed to at some point in their lives.

Warts are spread by making skin-to-skin contact with another person with a wart or by touching inanimate objects they have come into contact with. Once you have a wart, you can spread the virus to other parts of your body and cause more warts to pop up.

A common skin wart often goes away without treatment but if it is bothersome, ask your doctor about using an over-the-counter wart remedy that can help remove the wart. Be sure to see a medical professional for warts on your face or genitals. Never attempt to self-treat these areas.

How to Get Rid of a Wart

Several of the most common types of products use salicylic acid to slough off exterior layers of dead skin and give way to healthier skin underneath. These products are available as liquids or gels that you can apply to the wart, as well as bandages or pads that you can leave on the wart for continuous, discreet treatment.

Products for removing plantar warts on the feet are often padded in order to reduce pressure and discomfort.

Another option for home removal is cryotherapy which involves freezing the wart. These products will typically cause the wart to fall off within a number of weeks.
