Sounds weird, but this medicine works by blocking prostaglandins, which make your uterus and everything surrounding it cramp (back, bladder, colon, you get the idea). So for Midol to work best, you should take it the day/morning before you know you're going to have your period, and block the cramping before your body releases the prostaglandins. If you wait till after you start cramping, you can expect to wait about 1 hour for the medicine to kick in, since you still have circulating PGs that your body needs to rid before you block the next round. Sounds high-tech, but Midol is a God-send if you take it before cramps. Like the whole week never happened (almost). :) Hope this helps someone! Now, I am normally not so sensitive to caffeine but this product caused me really bad jitters, increased heart rate and overall discomfort. Yes, it did take the cramps away but the side effects were an unwelcome trade off. Some people may compare the caffeine in this product to be like the equivalent of drinking a soda, well, it was NOT like that for me. I've never gotten this type of jitters and discomfort from drinking a soda. For any of you gals who have taken diet pills, taking this type of Midol was like taking a diet pills and getting those uncomfortable diet pill jitters. That's the best thing I can compare it to. So, for anyone who hates the jittery feeling and/or may be even slightly sensitive to caffeine, I recommend choosing a different type of Midol, one without caffeine, or Premysn which has also worked very well for me. Best Uses Comments about Midol Complete, Caplets, Value Size, 40 ea: This medication did not relieve the pain at all. I recommend taking Midol Extended Relief, which contains Naproxen. Take about 500mg of Naproxen(my GYN doctor prescribes this dose for severe cramps). Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend Was this review helpful? Best Uses Comments about Midol Complete, Caplets, Value Size, 40 ea: I am now in my 40's and have more problems with cramps and other PMS symptoms (including migraines and bloating) than I did even 5 years ago. Motrin used to always work fine for me but now I need just a little something extra to take the edge off the bloating. I tried Midol and found it did help. I only take 1 tablet at a time b/c the caffeine can make me jittery but the pyrilamine can make me drowsy. I know they are supposed to cancel each other out but just doesn't happen for me. As an added bonus, the caffiene will often help my headaches/migraines if I don't take too much. Best Uses Comments about Midol Complete, Caplets, Value Size, 40 ea: i remember midol not working for me in high school, but this month i decided to try it again (after 5 years). i have horrible crying pain cramps and it wasn't effective at all for the pain, although i like the caffeine. i took 3 of thm initially and then three more two hours later, to no avail. i think ibuprofin is much better Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend (0 of 1 customers found this review helpful) Was this review helpful? Best Uses Comments about Midol Complete, Caplets, Value Size, 40 ea: I took Midol today for the third time. After trying it out previous months and it not working I decided to give it one more chance. I can now official say Midol is useless. Not only did it not work at all, is it possible I felt even worse? I would have to say my cramps can be pretty intense at the start of my period, but other pain killers usually does the trick (even though it takes a while to kick in). Midol never started working!!! I waited about 3 hours and nothing. That's a long time when the pain is so intense that you feel like fainting. Not to mention the pills are huge! Overall, I in no way, shape, or form felt like the cheerful girls in bikinis in the Midol commericals. Comments about Midol Complete, Caplets, Value Size, 40 ea: I was scheduled to work Labor Day and was not looking forward to it in the first place and when my cramps got intense I was planning to just call in sick and get written up. Then someone recommended I take Midol when I could not get anyone to cover my shift. Anyway, I thought Midol would be like Aleve and just mildly numb the cramps but it definitely worked much better. The cramps still hurt sporadically but Midol gave me energy and eased the pain significantly. My only complaint is that it took about 30-40 minutes to really take effect but it was well worth the wait. (I also suggest trying Midol with a thermal heating patch to help alleviate menstrual pain even more.)
