A Sight-Saver

Since 1998, I have used this product on the advice of my ophthalmologist as an ophthalmic lubricant. I suffer from recurrent corneal erosion. What this means--at least for me--is that I have chronically dry eyes and corneas that are weakly attached in at least one spot. So if I just go to sleep without any sort of ointment, when I wake up, the inner surface of my eyelids stick to my corneas, and I'm extremely likely to tear my corneas at the instant I open my eyes.

This is every bit as painful as it sounds. It renders my vision blurry and my eyes very light- and air-sensitive. This means I'm unable to drive or use a computer for a day, which means no work.

Muro 128 ointment is the only product I have found that works in the long term to prevent this 99% of the time. Every night, I put some in both eyes. It is opaque and therefore obstructs my vision, which is why I put it in right before bed. But it acts as a lubricating layer between my corneas and my eyelids.

I've tried less expensive ointments, but they burn and are far less effective than Muro 128. Some of them even seem to exacerbate the dry eye problem.

Please note that the packaging says not to use it for more than some set time without doctor approval, so if you plan to use this long-term, do check with your ophthalmologist to make sure it's okay.

The only real disadvantage I can think of is that it requires a little extra time in the mornings to get out of your eyes. I wipe around my eyes and over my lids with a soft cloth to remove most of the residue, then flush with warm water and pat dry again. But it's completely worth it for me.

In the occasion that I do still tear my cornea even with the Muro 128 in, I wait until some of the pain subsides (tears lessen the effectiveness of the ointment) and re-apply and either nap or just keep my eyes closed for a couple of hours. The Muro 128 soothes the pain and allows me to at least go about some of my normal day without excruciating eye pain.

I love Muro 128. It is literally a product I cannot do without.

The "drops" are added before going to bed, but it comes out in a thick almost solid "ribbon, making it hard to add to your eyes. It sticks to the eyes and causes very opaque blurring that does not easily vanish. This did not feel or seem natural at all.

Due to LASIK and cataract surgeries, as well as the fact that my eyelids do not close completely when I sleep, I have chronic dry eyes. If I do not use a good lubricant when I sleep, my eyes are painful and extremely irritated when I awake in the morning. This product is the absolute BEST in keeping my eyes moist and comfortable throughout the night and in the morning. I am never without it, whether I'm at home or away. I've used several other ointments, but none are as effective for me as this one.

I use this ointment every night to prevent a spontaneous corneal re-injury. After having a previous papercut on my cornea, my eye is more vulnerable to another upon opening in morning. Keeps my eyes moist so when I open in the AM, the dryness does not result in pain and opening old cut. Also is very soothing for dryness and allergies.
It does need to be warmed a bit in order to go on smoothly. Can either hold in hand or under water a bit to warm it.
