Lysine has anti-viral properties. My cat had a herpes type viral upper respiratory infection and these tend to recur. This type of infection can also cause serious ulcers on the eyes which can cause blindness. My vets recommended she stay on Lysine for the rest of her life. Seems to be working. I think that I must be allergic to some filler used in the supplement (or maybe the Lysine?) because every day for almost a week I took the recommended dosage and everyday by late afternoon I broke out in huge welts on my arms and my neck and ears became bright red and itchy. It did help my cold sores to subside a little, but it was hard to justify continued use with side effects like those! I purchased them for the great dosage size, but the pills (for even me, who normally scoffs at others who gripe about taking pills) are very large, chalky, bulky to take. The edges aren't rounded, and there isn't a coating on the pills - which means they get stuck frequently. I take with several glasses of water, and still the pills get stuck or about choke you. There are other better products out there, choose them. I think Solaray has one on Drugstore.com and it has had much better reviews. I will try that next, and am tossing out the rest of these useless pills. Pros

These are terrible round tablets that you feel going down your throat. Sometimes they would get stuck in my throat. I could feel them for a while. So needless to say I am ordering different pills and throwing these out! Pros
