I had been taking Lipitor, a statin, for 6 years. I started to have severe leg pain, so I stopped taking the Lipitor. My leg pains were virtually gone within two weeks. My cholesterol, however, went from 160 to 260 in one month. My doctor said to try the Red Yeast Rice. Unfortunately, after only a week of taking it, the leg pains were coming back. My doctor was going to put me on cholesterol medication, but gave me 90 days to lower my scores through diet and exercise. (I'm 52.) I didn't do anything radical, but I did make some improvements in these areas and also started taking four Red Yeast Rice capsules/day (Nature's Bounty). I started this drug because I wanted a natural statin for my high cholesterol unfortunately it caused the side effects of severe leg cramps and general malaise and flu like symptoms through out my body. so I had to stop taking it and go to a prescription statin drug. According to my cardiologist even though this is a natural product blood tests would have still been needed every couple of months to check on my liver function. so just keep that in mind if your looking for the natural way instead of prescription drug help. And it has the same side effects. Now I take provachol which is prescription with no side effects. It was still worth a try.
