I have read most of the reviews on here and I have come to the conclusion that the negative wrong wasn't about the product...it was about how the reviewer put it on. If you put this product on correctly, you will have no problem at all. I used it today, in fact, following self-tanner directions to the T, and I have a beautiful tan. It's a little light for me (I am fair skinned), so I will repeat the process tomorrow. And, it doesn't have a harsh smell as other self-tanners do. I can actually leave the house without taking another shower.

What self-tanner directions:

1. Exfoliate for a few days before application.

This is really the most important thing you can do. Your skin needs to be shed of its dead scaly layer of skin so the tanner isn’t trying to work its way through it. In the shower, rub a body scrub all over your body making sure you spend time on the areas that tend to be dry and scaly such as the knees and elbows.
2. Moisturize every day the week before you tan.

If not a week, at least a few days. You should apply body lotion liberally immediately after your shower or bath. In order to get an even application, your body needs to all start at the same place. Many times certain areas of your body, knees and ankles for example, are much drier than other areas. These areas soak up the self tanner which leads to blotchy coloring. Keeping your skin plumped up with moisture will help.
3. Do not apply the self tanner in your steamy bathroom.

The heat and moisture in the bathroom can cause you to start to sweat and the self tanner can melt and drip which will cause streaks. Also, wait until your body has cooled down after your shower. Hot skin will have the same affect.
4. Take your time with application.

Self tanning lotions take longer to dry than foam; if you need some extra time go with a lotion. If you have someone who can help, all the better. Start with one area of your body and work your way around. Pay attention to the part you’re working on and don’t rush. By moving slow and paying attention only to the area you’re working on, you’ll get much better results.
5. Dilute by half on the areas prone to dark spots.

Your knees, ankles and elbows are usually first to show if you don’t apply correctly. Mix half self tanner and half moisturizer for a more natural look.
6. Wash your hands multiple times during application

Latex gloves are another option. Use a damp triangle makeup sponge to apply to the backs of your hands. This will keep the self tanner off your palms and right where you want it to go. I also recommended a sponge for the top of your feet as well.
7. Wait 15 minutes to get dressed.

You may feel odd while waiting for your self tanner to dry, but if you don’t wait you may stain your clothes or your sheets. Grab a magazine or give a friend a phone call to pass the time.
How to use self-tanner on your face

This is a four-step process. Pull hair up in a ponytail before you start so you don’t miss any parts. According to InStyle’s May 2007 issue, makeup artist Scott Barnes once missed a spot on Jennifer Lopez’s ear because he forgot to pull her hair up.First, prep skin by gently cleansing and exfoliating. Skip moisturizer, which may interfere with the tanner.

Step two: Apply undereye cream. According to Barnes in InStyle, you want the color of your skin to be lighter under the eyes, it makes you look younger.

Step three: blend a few drops of self-tanner and equal parts moisturizer in the palm of your hand then apply over face and neck. You only want to go one shade darker than your natural color.

Step four: Let color develop for three hours then follow up with a sweep of bronzer on forehead, cheeks and nose — areas where the sun naturally shines.

Don’t forget: Smooth remaining tanner over earlobes and upper ears. Wash hands thoroughly. Don’t skip the sunscreen.

If you follow these, you will not be streaky at all. Remember: EXFOLIATE and TAKE YOUR TIME.

This product is easy to apply, goes on evenly and is great for building the perfect tan. I really liked this product for the first couple of weeks that I was able to use it. After this trial period, I had a terrible allergic reaction (had to get a systemic corticosteroid injection and Rx medication to treat the unbearable itching/hives). I've never had a problem using other Neutrogena products, but am sad that this just wasn't meant for me. I would recommend it to those who don't have sensitive skin allergies.

Comments about Neutrogena Build-a-Tan, 6.7 fl oz:

I have tried other name brand sunless tanners but still keep going back to Neutrogena. It's easy to use. Just start with small amounts at first. I use it every 2-3 days. It gives the best looking color. The only drawback is the scent, which I wish Neutrogena could improve.

I love this product. Compared to other self tanning lotions I've used, the scent is wonderful. I have very fair skin and this product does not make you look orange or unnatural. It is gradual enough so that you could use it daily for a natural looking tan.

Comments about Neutrogena Build-a-Tan, 6.7 fl oz:

I bought this in the hopes that I had finally found something that I could use that would work as far as self tanners are concerned. But honestly, it's like all the others I've tried. I now have places on my arms and neck that are really orange and some blotches here and there. Combine that w/the overpowering smell of a self tanner and I said, ok, enough is enough. I just purchased a tanning package at a local tanning place.

So my advice, unless you are super skilled at being able to evenly apply lotions, and don't mind smelling bad, then don't purchase this product. :(

This is the only self-tanner I buy. Have tried most of the other readily available brands as well as some I've ordered online and this one works the best with the least side-effects, such as streaking or ankle/knee/elbow build up. Just use a gentle exfoliating scrubber (or even a wash cloth will do) when I start to notice areas getting darker than others.

I have tried several tanning lotions, tanning cloths. Lost count. I found it easy to apply, not streaky, consistent color, long lasting. For me, it was similar to a spray tan without the expense, driving, parking, etc. Saved me time and money.

Exfoliation is key. Apply in a circular motion. Take the time to run in around ankles, toes. Also let it dry for 10 - 15 minutes. I wear an old dark light cotton dress while it's drying.

I've been a fan of every other Neutrogena product EXCEPT "Build-a-Tan" This left me skin with an unnatural orange tone - not even close to a natural tan. Neutrogena really let me down on this product.

This product is ok. It does give a nice tan coloring, but tends to leave orange colored spots. I mix the product with lotion which makes it apply more smoothly and evenly after exfoliating. I find that surprisingly it works best on my legs, unlike most other products that I've used in the past.
