With most blenders the blades are located at the bottom and the food/ice can form a bridge over the whirling blades. The Ninja has multiple levels of blades and avoids this bridging effect. Ice is crushed to the size of snow flakes.

It is the perfect machine for protien drinks. It can make it as smoth as you prefer. You need to be very careful cleaning it, as you do with all things that are sharp. These blades are extremely sharp. We know that we have not even scratched the surface on things that it can do.
