Chemical Name: NYSTATIN (nye-STAT-in)
Nystatin Powder is an antifungal used to treat infections of the mouth. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Nystatin Powder. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor and pharmacist of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Nystatin Powder.
Follow the directions for using Nystatin Powder provided by your doctor. Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure this dose. Dissolve Nystatin Powder in 4 to 8 ounces of water and stir well. Take Nystatin Powder right away. Discard any unused portion. IF THE MOUTH IS AFFECTED, place 1/2 the dose in each side of the mouth. Swish the medicine around the entire mouth. Retain the dose in your mouth as long as possible before swallowing, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. STORE THE POWDER in the refrigerator. TO CLEAR UP YOUR INFECTION COMPLETELY, continue taking Nystatin Powder for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF NYSTATIN POWDER, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
IF YOUR SYMPTOMS DO NOT IMPROVE within a few days or if they become worse, check with your doctor. PRACTICE GOOD ORAL HYGIENE, including proper care of dentures, while you are taking Nystatin Powder. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS DRUG IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using Nystatin Powder, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking Nystatin Powder include nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, or diarrhea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to Nystatin Powder is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. DO NOT SHARE NYSTATIN POWDER with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE NYSTATIN POWDER for other health conditions. KEEP NYSTATIN POWDER out of the reach of children. IF USING NYSTATIN POWDER FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
