You want to sit outdoors without being eaten by mosquitoes, but you don't want to drench yourself in smelly, sticky insect repellent. What do you do?

The OFF candle repellent system ("Power Pad" as they call it) is a decent solution. Unlike those useless citronella buckets and tiki torches, these things work. Unfortunately, they don't last long and they are expensive. A 3-candle+pad refill kit costs you over $6, and each candle+pad lasts for 4 hours. That means you're dropping $2+/candle, and 50 cents an hour for protection. Bug spray is more cost-efficient, but then you have to sit there smelling of it and sticky from it. So here we are.

I have found that putting the candles on the ground helps to maximize coverage -- if you leave it on a table, the mosquitoes still nip at your ankles. Remember also to put it upwind of where you're sitting if the wind is more than a few knots. (If it's more than 15 knots you're in luck - the mosquitoes probably can't fly in it anyway.)

Also, don't think you can use it for a couple of hours, put the candle out, come back in a week and use it again -- once you remove the Power Pad from its mylar envelope, the repellent embedded in it is going to evaporate one way or another.

In spite of the cost and short duration, I like this product and anticipate continuing to use it until something better comes out.

Don't waste your money

Although this item refills a container that is pretty compared to the bucket style candles I use, it's not worth the money. It is not worth the money. Stick with sprays or candles

We keep one of the off lanterns lighted with the off candle and wick within 6 feet of our back door at all times. It keeps mosquitoes from getting into our home. It works really well. Everyone should do it.

I use product at least 15 minutes prior to sitting in yard. It is so simple to use however there is candle burning so safety precautions need to be in place. Never leave children alone when using product.

Comments about Off! PowerPad Refills, 3 ea:

I have been using this product for years. I think it is not recommended for enclosed areas but unfortunately I have to use it indoors as nothing else seems to work.It does get the job done in seconds but the scent can be really overbearing and stifling. To eliminate safety risks i move the lit lamp quite briskly through the house leaving behind enough mist to kill the mosquitoes. As soon as I cover all the rooms i put the candle out. Walla!!!!! The mosquitoes are all dead. This way I get many uses from one power pad.

At first I thought the refills were a little expensive at approx. $2 each. But they burn for 4 hours and when I asked myself "would you pay someone 50 cents an hour to totally clear the porch of mosquitos?" it was a total no-brainer. This is the best mosquito repellent I've ever used, bar none. I grew up in Florida and I've used a bunch.

When we have company in the yard at night this works the best of everything we have tried. This is a very buggy Spring so far and i know I will be getting more of these. I have used them for a few years now and last year the refills were impossible to find. Stock up, they really work

We live in rural NH, and have a major mosquito problem! We set these lanterns up around the terrace and sit outside after dark with NO BUGS! We tried the mosquito magnets and they sorta worked, but died after the first year. However, these lanterns are the real McCoy! And they don't smell.

These work a lot better than citranella. We have a 16 X 24 foot deck and two of these keep virtually all of the Mosquitos away.
