I'm am soooo glad I found this product and I hope Ogilvie continues to make it forever!!!

I am Asian and have very coarse/wavy/kinky hair (completely unlike the pin straight/silky locks that most people think we have).

I had been having my hair professionally straightened with the Japanese thermal straightening process (Yuko) for years, but decided to stop as it was so effective that it completely removed all body from my hair (making it look very thin and sparse).

Without the Yuko straightening, my hair was a wild, unruly, shaggy mess! I had to flat iron it everyday or walk out of the house looking like a mop top (which happen more often than not as I prefer to be low maintenance and rather not spend more than 10 minutes getting ready).

I looked into the Brazilian straightening system (as it is supposed to leave more body in your hair) but didn't like the formaldehyde exposure. I read even the "new" non-formaldehype processes the salons are offering actually have chemicals that become formaldehyde during the processing.

I decided to try this home straightening product as a last resort. It basically is the same chemical as a home permanent wave kit except the solutions are thick and easier to use for straightening purposes. I also did some research and found the Yuko straightening system uses the same main chemical (ammonium thioglycolate).

I must admit the first time I tried this system, it didn't work. However, it wasn't that the product was faulty. It was because I didn't leave the solution on for long enough. My hair is VERY strong and resistant to chemicals (usually takes twice the amount of time to dye it) and although I left it on for the recommended maximum time (25 minutes) it wasn't enough time for MY hair.

I decided to give it another try (only a month later against their recommendations of at least 3 months between treatments) as the first time wasn't effective and I felt my hair was basically unprocessed.

The second time I left it in for 40 minutes (most people probably shouldn't try this as my hair is unusually coarse and strong - I never have split ends or breakage) and the results were PERFECT!!!

My hair is soft and shiny!!! If I go to bed with wet hair, I wake up to mainly straight hair with a very soft wave. And I still have a LOT of body to it!!! I can just run a comb through it and look presentable!

My recommendations are....

1. Have extra gloves. They do give you one pair but it's messy to have to keep them on the entire time or try to take them off and reuse them.

2. I didn't bother combing my hair the entire processing time (my second try). I just put in the straightening solution and combed it in - let it sit - then combed it straight at the end before rinsing it out. I think it will cause less damage than combing the whole time. Also keeps the solution IN your hair instead of squeezing it out.

3. If you have resistant hair like me, I would still only let it sit the maximum recommended time if it is your first time using the product. Better safe than sorry.

4. At least for me, I noticed my hair was effectively "processed" when it felt slimy with the straightening solution in it. Weird, but that's what I noticed. The slimy feeling goes away once you rinse out the solution.

5. Be very careful if your hair is processed (i.e. lightened) as it will be weaker and may result in breakage. I do color my hair but use a non-peroxide colorant. If you have had problems with the Yuko system (or home permanent wave) before, this is not the product for you as it uses the same chemical.

Again, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this product!!! Not only did it give me the result I wanted, it also saved me over $400 (as that's what a Yuko straightening would have cost me)!!!

I have naturally curly hair. Long & thick. Really the only one in my family (from my birth family -including siblings- and my mother's side of the family who has curly hair). Unlucky me who had the weird genes and got curly hair. HA HA

I've had my hair straightened before by a professional at a salon, but the stuff never stayed. That was back in 1998 or so. I saw results when my hair was wet, but once it dries it's just less curlier. Curls are still there, just a teeny bit less.

So it's like 11 years later and I'm going to try this straightening at home kit by Ogilvie.

Now be aware, you will be in the shower like 3 times washing out your hair. 1. For your regular shower. 2. To rinse out the straightening chemical. 3. Rinse out the neutralizer.

I know the results aren't going to be perfect considering how my hair has reacted before and I know how my hair reacts. My hair is long, thick and curly. So I know whats to be expected.

Let's begin...

I took my shower to clean my hair and is damp (My first shower). I've put the straightening chemical in and I'm waiting 25 minutes for it to sit. I am doing this review as I am waiting since I have to wait anyway. Brushing every other minute or two, since I didn't ask anyone to help me do this. You're supposed to keep brushing/combing your hair the whole 25 minutes.

The smell really isn't that bad. Normal chemical stuff for your hair. The reason why it might not smell that bad at a salon is they might have some kind of deodorizer or some diffusers in the salon.

Okay so all the chemical is washed out (2nd rinse) and I applied the neutralizer which I am supposed to leave in for 5 minutes.

Washed hair again (3d rinse). Let hair dry for about a half an hour. Then I put the leave-in-conditioner in.

So here is what I think.

I noticed right away that my hair was straighter... while it was wet. Cause usually it's still curly when it's wet.

After washing out the chemical, your hair will feel a little rough and tangled. To me this is normal and is to be expected with any harsh checmicals that you put into your hair.

After the neutralizer and leave-in-conditioner, my hair seemed to have regulated itself. It didn't feel rough or tangled.

Ok I'm back. My hair is finally dry (2 hours later), with the leave-in-conditioner in, cause you're supposed to leave it in hence leave-in-conditioner.

My hair doesn't really feel like it was damaged or dry as others may have experienced. Feels normal.

My hair is still fairly curly. The only parts that was 'wavy' was the top of my head (the part that was flat against my head) and my hair toward the back (the layer of hair near the neck.

As far as the top layer of my hair, it just seems like the curls are more uinform. Less whacked. Ha ha

I followed the instructions step by step. Except for the strand test because I'm always too lazy to do those.

Overall I am satisfied, I wasn't looking for pin-straight flat hair as I don't like that. I still want waves and fullness. Will try again in 3 months to see how much straighter it might or might not get for the top layer of hair.

Thank you, Kairalyn

This straightener works better than any salon straightening I have had done. I have very thick wavy hair, that has a tendency to be a little frizzy and bulky. This straightened my hair without taking away body and did not leave my hair flat and unnatural. My hair dries more quickly and has not lost it's shine. It was easy to do...I will use this again!

I put the straightening creme in my hair, then pulled the brush thru it ONE time. My hair kinked up horrible. Freaking out I washed it out and neutralized it. I only had this on my hair for less than five mins. When I washed my hair and dried it it was of a gummy bear consistency and came out in clumps anytime i touched or combed it. I used deep conditioning, protein treatments, hot oil, and cholesterol with no avail. The ends felt like straw and were incredibly frizzy. I went to the salon and they said there was nothing that could be done. I ended up having my shoulder length hair that took TWO YEARS to grow back to a pixie style AN INCH in the back because I now have bald patches!!!! I only wanted my ends a little straighter because I had healthy hair before this. [...] I will now be buying a wig until my hair grows a little!!! DO NOT BUY!!!!!!

This is a great product and I love it. Have used it for "many" years
with great results. I have naturally curly hair and do the treatment once or twice a year. The smell isn't the greatest but I find that it has improved a lot. Yes, if you color your hair pretty close to when you do the treatment, your hair color will be affected by this.
Overall, I am completely happy with this product.

my hairs really wavy and it bugs me so i used this product that I've been looking forward to using for almost a whole month! and then figured out all it did was commpletely destroy my hair and i still have to straighten it. my hair is not color treated i died it like a year ago so i dont consider that color treated. if you want this done go to a salon an dhaave it done the right way. maybe they will work better theyre also gonna be a [*] a lot more expensive so have fun!.

I used the product yesterday and my hair feels soft and in good condition. I will use it and order it again. Since my hair is very curly it still has a curl in it but is easier to straighten out with a curling iron. I left it in for the least timing because I wear my hair curly or straight. With this product I can.
