I'm am soooo glad I found this product and I hope Ogilvie continues to make it forever!!!

I am Asian and have very coarse/wavy/kinky hair (completely unlike the pin straight/silky locks that most people think we have).

I had been having my hair professionally straightened with the Japanese thermal straightening process (Yuko) for years, but decided to stop as it was so effective that it completely removed all body from my hair (making it look very thin and sparse).

Without the Yuko straightening, my hair was a wild, unruly, shaggy mess! I had to flat iron it everyday or walk out of the house looking like a mop top (which happen more often than not as I prefer to be low maintenance and rather not spend more than 10 minutes getting ready).

I looked into the Brazilian straightening system (as it is supposed to leave more body in your hair) but didn't like the formaldehyde exposure. I read even the "new" non-formaldehype processes the salons are offering actually have chemicals that become formaldehyde during the processing.

I decided to try this home straightening product as a last resort. It basically is the same chemical as a home permanent wave kit except the solutions are thick and easier to use for straightening purposes. I also did some research and found the Yuko straightening system uses the same main chemical (ammonium thioglycolate).

I must admit the first time I tried this system, it didn't work. However, it wasn't that the product was faulty. It was because I didn't leave the solution on for long enough. My hair is VERY strong and resistant to chemicals (usually takes twice the amount of time to dye it) and although I left it on for the recommended maximum time (25 minutes) it wasn't enough time for MY hair.

I decided to give it another try (only a month later against their recommendations of at least 3 months between treatments) as the first time wasn't effective and I felt my hair was basically unprocessed.

The second time I left it in for 40 minutes (most people probably shouldn't try this as my hair is unusually coarse and strong - I never have split ends or breakage) and the results were PERFECT!!!

My hair is soft and shiny!!! If I go to bed with wet hair, I wake up to mainly straight hair with a very soft wave. And I still have a LOT of body to it!!! I can just run a comb through it and look presentable!

My recommendations are....

1. Have extra gloves. They do give you one pair but it's messy to have to keep them on the entire time or try to take them off and reuse them.

2. I didn't bother combing my hair the entire processing time (my second try). I just put in the straightening solution and combed it in - let it sit - then combed it straight at the end before rinsing it out. I think it will cause less damage than combing the whole time. Also keeps the solution IN your hair instead of squeezing it out.

3. If you have resistant hair like me, I would still only let it sit the maximum recommended time if it is your first time using the product. Better safe than sorry.

4. At least for me, I noticed my hair was effectively "processed" when it felt slimy with the straightening solution in it. Weird, but that's what I noticed. The slimy feeling goes away once you rinse out the solution.

5. Be very careful if your hair is processed (i.e. lightened) as it will be weaker and may result in breakage. I do color my hair but use a non-peroxide colorant. If you have had problems with the Yuko system (or home permanent wave) before, this is not the product for you as it uses the same chemical.

Again, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this product!!! Not only did it give me the result I wanted, it also saved me over $400 (as that's what a Yuko straightening would have cost me)!!!

I have naturally curly hair. Long & thick. Really the only one in my family (from my birth family -including siblings- and my mother's side of the family who has curly hair). Unlucky me who had the weird genes and got curly hair. HA HA

I've had my hair straightened before by a professional at a salon, but the stuff never stayed. That was back in 1998 or so. I saw results when my hair was wet, but once it dries it's just less curlier. Curls are still there, just a teeny bit less.

So it's like 11 years later and I'm going to try this straightening at home kit by Ogilvie.

Now be aware, you will be in the shower like 3 times washing out your hair. 1. For your regular shower. 2. To rinse out the straightening chemical. 3. Rinse out the neutralizer.

I know the results aren't going to be perfect considering how my hair has reacted before and I know how my hair reacts. My hair is long, thick and curly. So I know whats to be expected.

Let's begin...

I took my shower to clean my hair and is damp (My first shower). I've put the straightening chemical in and I'm waiting 25 minutes for it to sit. I am doing this review as I am waiting since I have to wait anyway. Brushing every other minute or two, since I didn't ask anyone to help me do this. You're supposed to keep brushing/combing your hair the whole 25 minutes.

The smell really isn't that bad. Normal chemical stuff for your hair. The reason why it might not smell that bad at a salon is they might have some kind of deodorizer or some diffusers in the salon.

Okay so all the chemical is washed out (2nd rinse) and I applied the neutralizer which I am supposed to leave in for 5 minutes.

Washed hair again (3d rinse). Let hair dry for about a half an hour. Then I put the leave-in-conditioner in.

So here is what I think.

I noticed right away that my hair was straighter... while it was wet. Cause usually it's still curly when it's wet.

After washing out the chemical, your hair will feel a little rough and tangled. To me this is normal and is to be expected with any harsh checmicals that you put into your hair.

After the neutralizer and leave-in-conditioner, my hair seemed to have regulated itself. It didn't feel rough or tangled.

Ok I'm back. My hair is finally dry (2 hours later), with the leave-in-conditioner in, cause you're supposed to leave it in hence leave-in-conditioner.

My hair doesn't really feel like it was damaged or dry as others may have experienced. Feels normal.

My hair is still fairly curly. The only parts that was 'wavy' was the top of my head (the part that was flat against my head) and my hair toward the back (the layer of hair near the neck.

As far as the top layer of my hair, it just seems like the curls are more uinform. Less whacked. Ha ha

I followed the instructions step by step. Except for the strand test because I'm always too lazy to do those.

Overall I am satisfied, I wasn't looking for pin-straight flat hair as I don't like that. I still want waves and fullness. Will try again in 3 months to see how much straighter it might or might not get for the top layer of hair.

Thank you, Kairalyn

I love this product. I'm African American and I was natural and wanted to change my look. My mom used to use this product on my hair when I was younger. She wanted something effective but not as harsh as most relaxers for African Americans. Thus why I chose this product because my hair is also colored. Love it! My hair hasn't broken off, it's straight and I love my new look. Very easy to use as long as you follow the instructions!!

I tried a product I could buy locally instead of waiting for my quick delivery of this product that I have used before. The product I tried locally burned/melted my hair! I am so glad that you still carry this product as i have used it before and it works great!! It does have a strong smell but to me no worse that color.

I use this product about once every 6 to 8 weeks in order to straighten my hair. It's strong and smells bad, but relatively effective. Be careful if you have thin hair, it burn it in as little as 7 or 8 minutes. Ber sure to use a good quality conditioner as well.

Follow directions closely and if color is on hair...reduce amt of combing time. I use this product every spring to eliminate frizzy hair. I only use this straightener because I know it's safe if directions are followed. I LOVE the softness and smoothness it gives to my coarse hair. It keeps my hair soft longer than 3 mos. Personally, I didn't want "bone straight" hair because I can use a straigtening iron to achieve that.I wanted smoother and softer texture which the product delivers. Tip: I have very heavy thick hair and I prefer a wider tooth comb than what is included in package. The finer comb tends to pull out too many strands and requires too much "tugging". For the next few days until shampooing....no pulling or ponytails should be worn.....wear a visor if necessary!

When hair is becoming too curly, I use Ogilvie straightner. It is easy to use, makes my hair very soft and manageable and effects on my hair are not harsh and last for 2- 3 months.

I read all the amazing reviews and the ones saying her hair fell out and just thought "there's no way that would happen to me!" Well, first off, the smell of it is so putrid and is probably the worst thing iv'e ever smelled. Also, it has been hours and I can't go in one half of my house because the smell is still prominent and strong. Then I went to go brush my hair with the Straightening Lotion in and my hair ripped out! It made my hair feel rubbery and easily ripped off. It felt like the thin plastic hairs on those plastic toy balls you see in the arcade machines, if that makes sense. So, I ran to the bathroom and immediately washed it out and it ruined my hair. My hair still smells of it and I FULLY regret buying and using this!

I always use this brand on my daughters hair with NO issues... i received the package today and luckily only applied it to the lower back part of her hair or else we would have had a very big problem! it was in there no more than 30 seconds and her hair was coming out in chunks....

I have been using this product on my hair for over 5 years. I have also used it on friend's hair. You really need to do the treatment twice to see flat results. I use it every 10-14 weeks. You will need to buy two boxes if your hair is thick/long. I recommend sectioning your clean, wet hair with non-metal elastics, into 8-10 sections. Put the straightener on the roots first, then take out all the elastics and comb through the rest. You need to make sure ALL the hair is completely coated with the cream. Then wait the 25 minutes. Rinse extra well, for 7 or more minutes. After this apply the neutralizer as directed. Leave at least a two hour window for the whole process, more if your hair is thick/long. Also, if you color your hair, this will lighten it, so plan to color the following week. I tried everything to make my coarse frizz flatter. This truly works.
