I use a base coat, then the polish (maybe 2 coats), then a top coat or else it will chip. With the matte colors I have to use a base and a top coat or it chips in 2 hours (so it isn't really a matte color anymore). Also, base coats help prevents discoloration of the nail (especially if natural nails like mine).
